California Academy of Sciences now scanning to BHL!
BHL launches revamped social media campaign: Grace and Bianca working to revamp BHL's social media marketing and user engagement through the following avenues:=
- BHL Blog
- @BioDivLibrary on Twitter - multiple posts daily esp. regarding a BHL page of the day #bhlpod and species of the day #bhlspotd; please follow us if you're on twitter; when posting something BHL related from your own account, please use the hashtag #bhlib
- BHL Facebook page
- BHL Flickr identity and BHL Flickr Group -- what's cool is that we are now contributing our flickr posts to EOL species pages via our BHL Flickr identity! Look at the images for Traphelagus on EOL (images on page 2 of their flickr widget has a BHL plate)
- BHL Linkedin group (you must have a Linkedin profile and be logged in to access the group)
- (Slideshare too, see below under "Presentations/Papers" section)
- Bianca and Grace will be keeping track of social media metrics and formulating a plan, in the coming months, to better engage with users through these social media outlets. First and foremost goal = wrack up more followers/members/likes/etc. and experiment with posts to see what garners the best response. Suggestions for posts welcome. Please spread the word!
- Social media icons to be added to the BHL homepage, blog, and public wiki (as well as CiteBank) soon.
Personnel Updates: MCZ - Katie Mullen has moved on to a new position (best of luck!); SIL - Welcomes Gilbert Borrego

Scanlist
- For guidelines on how to EXPORT your existing bids, please see Scanlist Notes
- A few minor bugs noticed in scanlist that Wolfgang is working to fix over the course of this month
- As a reminder, there is a problem with the bids for content ingested between November 2009 and June 2010 - Mike is working to address this problem. Please double check the BHL portal before you send a new serial title for scanning.
- Please remember to update your bids and do not overlap with other BHL members
Gemini
- Updated version of Gemini, 4.0.0, now released. We should be moving to the updated version by the close of April.
- Botany priority titles are now in Gemini, please prioritize these issues if you are assigned to them
- Bianca working through a back-log of scanning requests
- If you have completed the issue assigned to you, please leave a comment updating the group and feel free to un-assign yourself [hit the Control key and and un-select your name from the resource menu box]
- If you need help closing your issues, please see BHL Gemini User Guide.doc
- For Q1 stats, please see Gemini Stats
BHL Portal Issues
- New BHL search UI released!
- Searching by series. Yes! Mike L. has implemented the ability to search by series statements. But now we have the problem of many search results returned for a search for "Fieldiana" for example...
- Suggestion to implement a "genre" specific search that would allow you to specify "book" or "journal" before implementing your search; notice the <Genre> field in the BHL "Brief" view
- BHL harvest of non-OCR'd content (C/J/K): IA cannot generate OCR text files for content in Chinese, Japanese or Korean. The BHL does not, as a matter of policy, bring in content that does not have OCR files associated with it. Mike L. is working on adjusting the <Language> field in the IA database (not in the MARC!) such that IA will think these works are in English or Latin and automatically derive what OCR it can. This allows the taxonomic names embedded within these works to be OCR'd at least. With Mike's tweaking of IA's database, C/J/K works should be appearing in the BHL shortly.
- © fields in item metadata need work: (c) data for materials in the BHL portal need to be made available for works, when necessary, in CiteBank. BHL Portal (c) data is in serious need of review. (c) fields in the wonderfetch have been used differently by BHL members. Bianca to work with Trish, Jane, Diana and Grace to address these issues.
- MODS update: As a reminder, BHL records are adapted from the original MARC sent with the title at the time of scanning. Records in the BHL database are now being mapped to MODS. Trish has been working with Mike L. to finalize these mappings. Mike L. is coordinating with David Heskett to make sure the proposed mappings jive with CiteBank before implementing the new mappings in the BHL portal. The "Detailed" display should not change, however the "MODS" display will. Once these mappings are finalized, we can begin to offer BHL records for import via OAI-PMH to other libraries and institutions who want our records. This is seen as more efficient and real-time-up-to-date than suggesting that libraries and institutions download our records from WorldCat.
- Page insertion problem: A problem was discovered with pages not being inserted into BHL items from content re-scanned by IA. Issue relates to way in which BHL items are harvested from IA. TBD
- Collections module added to Admin Dashboard: BHL Staff have the ability to create collections of titles or items (not both) that fit within a particular collection. Module located under "Admin Functions" menu. These collections will then be made searchable via the new BHL search UI. How-to documentation needed to guide staff in using the module.
- PDF creator:
- Select pages to download issue resolved: When issue numbers are in the metadata, you can see them when you go to generate a pdf. This is especially helpful if page numbering starts over again for multiple issues bound within a single volume. For items that have not had issue numbers added, the problem remains. Issue numbers can be assigned through the pagination module.
- Users downloading full books, 100 pages at a time! This slows the PDF generator to a halt preventing other users from receiving their PDFs. 2 known users to date habitually do this and we have a limited ability to stop them. Mike L. working on a way to allow the PDF generator to handle a larger load and enable the ability to block users if need be.
- Trish and Bianca to propose updates to PDF generator UI once their metadata analysis for the LITA National Forum is completed
- Pagination: SIL, MCZ, Field actively working on pagination
