Attendees: Jane (NHM), Alison (NHM), Diane (MBLWHOI), Chris Carden (MCZ), Diana Shih (AMNH), Matthew Bolin (AMNH), Kevin (NYBG), Suzanne Pilsk (SIL), Martin (SIL), Gilbert (SIL), Grace (SIL), Michelle (MOBOT), Trish (MOBOT), William (MOBOT), Diana Duncan (Field), Bianca (BHL)
Round Robin
Q for all: Do you use the <publication date> field in the Wonderfetch? If so, how?
MBL
- sent carts earlier this week, primarily gap-filling based on Gemini, some permissions;
- re: Wonderfetch, yes using publication date field, DR enters manually, not sure what MP does, they picklist as they go, not generated automatically from ILS, always populated
AMNH
- sent 1 truck this month (3rd total) and 1 to come back next week, all Gemini;
- re: Wonderfetch 260C and vol. pub date - if exists in OPAC then yes, but if it does not exist then no, no manual entry
NHM
- re: Wonderfetch adds in the date
- started scanning this month (great news!), miniumum of 70,000 GBP to scan; IA operator working PT; should be able to pick off things on priority list; still challenge on handling monographs; to regroup w/ Bianca to get monographs going; got permission for some Society, Jane to send BC the info and permissions agreement letter
NYBG
- sent shipments in late Jan and early March, preparing 3rd shipment, all Gemini, to go out in 2 weeks;
- John Mignault is the best one to answer Wonderfetch question, but Kevin believes they're not manually putting it in, just deriving from OPAC if avail like AMNH
MCZ
- lost Katie, looking for a new person, in the meantime Joe and Chris working on Gemini
- sending truckloads out by mid-April;
- not sure about the Wonderfetch, BC thinks there is some manual entry
SIL
- sending small shipments every week; all Gemini for now but soon sending gap-fills for SIL titles;
- currently not passing pub date in Wonderfetch, based on database, Grace will talk to Keri to investigate this
- Gilbert has just joined SIL staff and is working with Grace and Erin; doing QA, pagination and helping to pull books
MOBOT
- consistently scanning Gemini requests;
- received grant for scanning of Orchid folios, Betterlight scanner to scan these orchid materials, need to fulfill grant through October, BC to tweet about this, Michelle to create an "orchid" collection in BHL portal
- Note: Wonderfetch does not apply to MOBOT
Field
- filling Gemini requests and sending to SIL;
- Diana is manually exporting records and sending them to Grace, md passed into SIL dbase so no pub date is passed via Wonderfetch
Cal Academy (not on call, Becky attending IMLS meeting)
Life and Literature conference update:
http://www.lifeandliterature.org
- planned for Nov 14 & 15 at Field museum in Chicago,
- financed by Loundsberry foundation;
- April 11 registration, limited registration, defined by the venue, but some flexibility with rooms, not yet a definite number, register early!
- schedule is almost ready; 1st day George Dyson is plenary speaker, not sure about 2nd speaker, 4 panels: bioinformatics, publishing and sci communications, biodiversity literature panel;
- 2nd day: planning a BHL mash-up competition, review panel still to be finalized, Anthony Goddard to be guiding this, award granted on 2nd day, humanities and biodiversity literature panel,
- part of conf goal is setting BHL agenda for next 5 years; need out of the box thinking; report to come as a result;
- twitter @life_lit: also FB page http://www.facebook.com/pages/Life-and-Literature-Conference/123924724346890 as well
Brief and Detailed views in BHL portal - any feedback?
SP: what about 300s? Did we decide not to show that?
GC: it would be great if we could access that info in BHL for workflow
BC: would be useful to have more detailed info for staff avail, users might not care but detailed views really benefit librarians using BHL, not sure if this data is available in the BHL dataset already, remember we derive the BHL data from the MARC records, might be harder than we expect to implement
if people could spend some time looking deeper at the detailed views and send feedback to Trish
CB update
- David Heskett has created batch uploader tool
- JEANH has been loaded into CB, working on JAMCA, and RJBMadrid
- added CB data contributors page http://citebank.org/about/content_providers to make it easy for people to understand what contributors we're loading, as we bring more in we'll be adding more to the list, easy way for you to see what content is in CB
Copyright metadata in BHL portal
- Copyright issues have arose in CB from materials being brought in from portal.
- Showing our data in different ways from portal to CB. Particularly pdfs being created by users.
- We need accurate copyright info for the pdfs. Need to look at how copyright info is being passed and displayed in portal (i.e. look at wonderfetch and how its used) This would be the information that says “Permission to digitize granted by ….”
- Need Volunteers to look at data and make recommendations on how to improve either automatically and/or manually. Volunteers: Jane (NHM), Grace, SI; Diana, AMNH, Trish, MOBOT [- Mar 31, 2011THANKS SO MUCH]
Conferences:
BC presented at CIL;
LITA conference in St. Louis Sept:
- 2 proposals accepted
- since we have enough BHL people who are going, maybe we could do a BHL staff meeting, Tom looking at budget,
- need an agenda, good to maybe have a combo staff and technical meeting;
- relatively close to life and lit conference so maybe would be good to generate ideas esp. for future of BHL esp. re: staff involvement;
- could also discuss how the new BHL gov structure will play out, thinking about new roles and responsibilities; to be multiple tiers of membership, tier 1: institution pays into a fund to pay for daily operations; tier 2: do not have funding but still want to participate in workflow but not to participate in gov; tier 3: contributing content but you don't care about how that happens…more detailed notes about new BHL gov proposal in IC minutes;
- SP: it would be good for an IC member to help with the agenda to shift our focus from workflow to more governance related input
NEH grant:
Need way to identify illustrations and color plates in BHL, over last couple of weeks have been in discussion with NEH about doing this, partnered with Indianapolis museum of art to do this, CF & MK have been working with IMA folks, MOBOT to be a lead on this grant, different levels, an algorithm and a tool to support manual finding,
SP: deliverable est.? 3 yr. project to start at the beginning of next year, ending in 2014
Reminder, please make sure to not overlap on Scanlist bids
IA freezing items
<curate> field can be approved or frozen by IA,
if frozen then not getting into BHL,
spreadsheet extracted w/ frozen items,
GC already contacted institutions and folks have been taking care of them, UIUC items are an issue;
please make sure to talk to your scanning centers about them freezing materials and not telling you
send GC an email if you have any questions
please see
IA Frozen Items Discussion for more details and the spreadsheet
C/J/K items not coming into BHL
- thanks to NYBG for bringing this issue to our attn
- BHL does not harvest content that does not have OCR text associated with it
- IA does not have the ability to OCR C/J/K text, thus no OCR, no BHL harvest
- Mike will be addressing the problem by changing the language fields associated with these items to English/Latin and having IA re-derive the OCR so that at least the taxonomic names are identified; then he will incorporate into BHL
- should be taken care of end of April/early May, stay tuned
Q1 staff reports due (already?!) and Bianca to send them out next week, see
