Agenda & Notes
Discuss feedback from first round of testing and discuss factors impacting which issues might be addressed in the first release of full text search.
Issues for consideration for Initial Launch of Full Text Search
- Date facet to be presented chronologically (High value / Low effort)
- Agreed that this is doable and valuable. We will do this.
- Other facets, users were more interested in alphabetical or at least consistent display (i.e., Type should always display in same order). (Med value / High effort, except perhaps Type).
- Type: 5 that apply to books, plus however we have for segment types. So less than 10. Managable to sort alphabetically.
- Other facets can wait until more user feedback. Interest in seeing sorted alphabetically came from becoming used to a system and clicking, say first option, because were used to using that one. For facets with a manageable number of options, this could make sense.
We can see what kinds of feedback we get on the others.
- Author facet: interest in not only alphabetical, expand to see all; also, for zoology titles it was noted that almost all authors were organizations; they were looking for individuals in the author facet. I don’t know if article-level authors are included there but should be. That’s where I see this getting potentially more involved. (High value / High effort)
- Remove organization names from facet. Still want to search for publications with those authors.
- Increase number of results beyond 10
- Other work on this will wait until we have cleaner author metadata
- For results (prior to filtering) – all testers indicated they would like results sorted chronologically by date published. It was confusing to see volume numbers out of order. If default is relevancy ranked, we should add option to sort by publication date. (High value / Med effort)
- Will clarify what users want before making any changes.
- Remove contributor facet
- Wait on alphabetizing other facets until more data
Past 2 weeks
- Updated indexes, can now search for identifiiers, DOIs, OCLC number, ISSN, ISBN
- Fixed diacritic issues
- Started looking at solution for production indexing
- Performed load test
Add searches for Identifiers to Test Plan
Aiming for Mar 1-9 for next round of testers
Updates from Martin
Cataloging things - MJ is very interested in working on authority stuff, downloading author names. Will be discussing that on cataloging group. Susan has been meeting with them. They requested a report on creator names. MJ using OpenRefine capability for VIAF.
Future data model - Index Data people working on FOLIO project, open library repository stuff, working on EDM. What would a BHL data model be? That could be something we put into the mix for BHL version 2.
Presentations on FOLIO at Code4Lib too
IIIF - SI is moving forward with this. MRK attended meeting on that last week. Not a great bookviewer from what could tell. Might be an opportunity for BHL to contribute. Bodleian had IIIF book viewer
All or selection? could be all, could select a page to launch into IIIF. Still a lot to be determined in terms of leveraging it for things like annotations.
Hillary Goodson from Australia at RDA meeting - They might want to host a copy of BHL on super computer. Interested in thinking about this. 1st iteration could be a dark copy as a test. Her and Ely Wallis are talking
