Selection & Deduplication
Scanlist
- "Bidlist" moved from its birthplace in London to its new home in Vienna and now managed by Wolfgang Koller
- IA bids for ingested titles added to the Scanlist and updated weekly
- To Address: Serial titles ingested prior to June 2010 (first ingest Nov 2009) that do not meet new Ingest Criteria are not reflected in the scanlist
- log-ins created for BHLE libraries and some bids placed for future BHLE scanning
- Functionality enabled to allow institutions to export a list of all bids they have placed
- To Address: Investigate ability to export list of all titles where no bids have been placed
Gemini
- Adopted new, upgraded, hosted version of Gemini
- Implemented management of scanning requests
- Implemented management of priority title scanning
- Created how-to manual for BHLers in using Gemini
- Established workflow for issue triage and overall management of issues
BHL Portal Issues
- New MARC fields for title associations added. MARC 770 & 772 options (as well as others) now available for related titles in admin dashboard. These fields now being incorporated into the BHL database so that they can appear automatically for BHL records in the portal where appropriate. Applies to titles being harvested since change. Retrospective addition of these fields for titles previously in BHL TBD.
- "Not in BHL" issue solved. Problem with items associated with merged titles not showing up in BHL. (When a title merge occurs, one record is generally unpublished from BHL to reconcile search results into one). Mike L. has implemented a script to automatically associate items scanned to a merged record (the unpublished record) to the merged-into, or published title.
- Primary/secondary relationship issues resolved. Title merging now SO much easier. The same volume can be attached to multiple titles and remain searchable under both records, such as with Handbook of amphibians and reptiles of Kansas, also no. 2 (1950) Misc. publications U. of Kansas http://www.biodiversitylibrary.org/item/54674. (New MODS display also helped here).
- "Squished" fold-outs fixed. Now fold-outs no longer appear squished when viewing them in the BHL portal!
- MODS display: New MODS display implemented for records in BHL. MODS view allows us to now show the data as it exists in the BHL database, including all portal edits. MARC view had shown only a reflection of the MARC record passed by the scanning institution. This became complicated with title merges as only one MARC record was randomly chosen for display rather than the aggregate of the two records combined. MARC view now replaced with MODS view and "Detailed" view now shows descriptions of MODS fields. Fields still need to be revised for optimal mapping from MARC and description in the "Detailed" view.
- New BHL bibliography UI: Example for Poa annua http://www.biodiversitylibrary.org/name/poa+annua
- Page insertion problem: A problem was discovered with pages not being inserted into BHL items from content re-scanned by IA. Issue relates to way in which BHL items are harvested from IA. TBD
- Collections module added to Admin Dashboard: BHL Staff have the ability to create collections of titles or items (not both) that fit within a particular collection. Module located under "Admin Functions" menu. These collections will then be made searchable via the new BHL search UI.
- PDF creator:
- Select pages to download issue:
- Users downloading full books, 100 pages at a time! This slows the PDF generator to a halt preventing other users from receiving their PDFs. 2 known users to date habitually do this and we have a limited ability to stop them. Mike L. working on a way to allow the PDF generator to handle a larger load and enable the ability to block users if need be.
- Searching by series. Yes! Mike L. has implemented the ability to search by series statements. To be implemented with release of new BHL search UI.
- New BHL search UI under development. Sneak peak: http://beta.biodiversitylibrary.org/. Next steps: BHL staff review, final tweaking, release scheduled for February/March.
- Pagination: Pagination How To Revised 2.0.doc
- OpenURL resolver and paginator relationship realized and new paginating practices implemented
- Issue start/end and volume fields now being used
- Addressing columnar pagination
- Who is doing paginating?
- IA updates:
- Scan request form implemented in June. Over 800 requests received (see Gemini stats for more detail).
- BHL usage stats for 2010: 837,000 visits, 422,000 unique visitors, 4.2 million pageviews (from Chris Freeland's BHL & JSTOR Plant Science presentation)

To Do in 2011
- Develop Collection Development Policy
- Post due diligence practices to public facing wiki
- Review and revamp permissions wiki page
- To explore collections issues and CiteBank as it develops further.
Permissions
- All permissions reviewed and issues related to gap-fill needs and new titles entered into Gemini
- Permissions form language under review for modification to accomodate monographs
- New titles acquired for 2010: 32, just about the same as for 2009; with CiteBank now available we should see an increase for 2011!
- Perhaps there's a need to tweak the permissions for for CiteBank content?
BHL collection growth stats

Documentation & Communication
- BHL blog has a new look! http://biodiversitylibrary.blogspot.com/
- Cookbook started gathering "recipes". More need to be added.
- Public wiki: lots of new pages added/tweaked in 2010, but need to appoint official public wiki reviewer person/group for 2011
- Should public wiki be adapted for use with CiteBank or remain only for the portal?
