Putting it all together

Collections Analysis < Functional Requirements < Functional Req. 2 <> Future Needs > Final Thoughts

How can we put this all together -

2:15 - 3:15 [4:15?]
Brewster Kahle, IA - Scanning
Tom Garnett, SIL
Graham Higley, NHL - MR Functional Requirements, scanning workflow, citation resolver, abbreviation resolver, database hosting.

Notes:

Coordinating with the community to physically set up scanning center - Each BHL member should look in its neighborhood to see who can team together to support a multi-unit scanning center.

On the library sice - there is a need for 1 person full time. Robin Chandler at California Digital Library is a good contact for workflow, staffing, etc.

5 cameras can be set up fairly quickly and then a ramp up to 10 units. 2 years scanning is required for the scanning station to break even financially.

We have the funds in place to begin the Metadata Repository. OCLC is working on mashing together the data. To get started by this fall, we need the funds for the scannign stations and a system in place for picking material. The data collection in place to handle serials. And the storage locations for the resulting files created.

Tom Garnett suggested a dual path with scanning starting at the same time as a prototype front interface is worked on.

Collection Development:
Chris Mills reiterated the over all need for a clear collection development policy that is also flexible.
Collection Development Policy group needs to make some interesting decisions post OCLC metadata analysis returns:
What are we going to scan?
Multiple editions?
Minerals?
Formats?

SEEP:
A prototype described as a skinny end to end BHL workflow and process was suggested - The term The Skinny End To End Pipe (SEEP) was coined by Courtney Shaw. The SEEP should have a complex serial run as a the target . The workflow should be built on what Internet Archive already has in place. Metadata will be dependant on what OCLC delivers back. The SEEP should incoroporate some of the UBIO Taxonomic Intelligent tools.
Bernard Scaife, Martin Kalfatovic, Christie Stephenson, Brewster Kahle, Mark McKinney volunteered to be on the SEEP group. Title needs to be picked with in the next few weeks

Workflow:
Work with Brewster and staff.
Anne Juneau, Bill Carney, Ed Chamberlain, Robert Miller, Robin Chandler, Lowell Ashley were all names suggested to work on the physical workflow process.

Digital workflow and metadata workflow also needs to be considered.
