Notes:
Monographic deduper – recap on inconsistencies
Agreed last month that all would put in a retrospective list
ML added functionality to BHL dashboard to help in process
Confirmed updated to deduper:
- AMNH end of month
- Becky/CAS done
- Marty- scanned monograph. Needs some guidance on process. Will email Bianca
- Diana – done
- JJ – nothing to update yet
- BC adds monographs on anything we ingest—non-BHL members--on monthly basis; completed through July. Includes some LC stuff; BC, TS, and MN to discuss
- Kew -- between monograph and serial. It’s on mono-dedupe and so has been uploaded
- MBL – a couple more weeks
- MBG -- done
- MCZ – uploading all along
- Smithsonian Libraries is done,
- USGS - not on call
- ANSP – not on call, waiting on but might be done already since they've only scanned a few monographs
- BC / CS will unlock spreadsheet once deduper loads are up to dates
GNA requirements: indexing citations in BHL & 3rd party links
Various groups: Collections Committee, Technical team, BHL Secretariat (Martin, Bianca, Carolyn) have been discussing the issue of GNA requirements
Part of process of integrating CiteBank materials
We have decided to transfer a lot of those citations into BHL repository
Thru process, in BHL we would end up with citations that are indexed that would link to content that lives on a different website, might not live in BHL repository but it would link you to an electronic version in another repository
Discussing idea – would we want to link to citations, no third party content in terms of electronic scans
Connie: This has not been decided. Concerns – lack of full text attached to citations.
And even linking out to third party
BC: Exec Committee will discuss document outlining pros and cons and make a decision
CR: So any comments would be welcome
BC: Feel free to make comments. Will make sure link open to everyone
WU: different points, please give us your opinion
BC: Feel free to reach out to me with any questions
Don: Cutoff date for comments? What is next step?
Martin – rough outline: EC won’t discuss until Sept, so def open for comment through rest of this month. At that pt, MK and BC will go through and summarize, EC will review document and recommendations and will reach a decision on how to go forward
Gemini
Issue tracking where we collect feedback primarily requests for content to scan
Please pass on any issues you can’t complete, and assign to someone else
If you have any questions, add Jackie or Bianca to the issue and we can help with reassigning
Any questions about working in Gemini?
- If we found something we couldn’t do, and we found the institution, how do we know who at the institution to pass to?
- New version of Gemini?
- - Currently running 4.2 and they’re at 5.2. Upgrade will take some finagling. Shouldn’t be a break in service but will keep all posted. Functionality should be relatively the same. Interface cleaner, and some new features we may find useful
Upgrade to new Gemini version could be a good time to do a Gemini review if that would be useful
-- would be a great idea
--Mike – what APIs have changed between versions? If changed, might have to update website
Round robin
- Cornell, Marty – adjusting to ½ time status. Pushing scanned content to IA since June. As of most recent ingest, we have 340 volumes we’ve added. A lot Entomology but not all. Completed some requests through Gemini. Who will help pay for in-house scanning which is substantially more expensive then sending out because of the specialty nature of it. IAALD was held at Cornell in July we did have a BHL poster, the one by BC , BJ and CR, reused to expose attendees to BHL. Would be nice to have a generic one. Numbers, collaboration. An overview. Poster is on Pinterest: http://pinterest.com/pin/42925002671950324/
Might be good to have general poster that could be reused at different events, an overview.General overview slides also on Pinterest: http://pinterest.com/pin/42925002671818117/ - Field, Diana – not scanning currently. Intern working on pagination, and documenting those numbers. Christina is posting those
- HUH, JJ – got a shipment ready, coordinating with Joe and Connie. Working to scan rare copy of on Origin of Species w/ Asa Gray's annotations. Blog post? Yes! BC to help
- Kew, David – completed first IA shipment, reviewing Gemini progress, view to in house scanning
- LC, Michael – meeting next week to orient with responsibilities. Tomoko reports that LC Teachers Institute plugged BHL and was successful - congrats!
- MBL, Matt – spend more time on working with Jackie on Gemini issues, getting closer to sending in some scanning. In Sept, Digital History & philosophy of Science in Bloomington, attending. Did a talk last year, and Trish is giving one this year. They’ve had a strong connxn to MBL over yrs
- MBG, Randy – still doing Englemann correspondence, others digitized such as Gartenflora and plugging away as uaual
- MCZ , Joe – Shipment out to IA, completed, another shipment ready to go. Should be sending out shortly. To hep promote BHL –Africa, we scanned more publications from SANBI and now in portal, permissions publications that Connie worked out. Connie will forward permissions forms to BC
- NYBG, Don – issue with metadata that did not end up in BHL from IA, worked out with Princeton, issue with Wonderfetch, now corrected and in BHL. Also some copyright data that we’ll have a volunteer work on inputting that. John Torrey papers and correspondence in now and writing up final report for CC. Waiting to hear about funding. May be losing all personnel except John.
- John Torrey birthday! BC will look into getting out some tweets about field books
- Gilbert, Smithsonian. Scanning, same amount every week. Roughly 15 a week. Almost all are Gemini issues. Paginating away
Interns – 3 this summer. Blog posts, putting together documentation and tutorials about how to do submit posts. Processing backlog of scan requests. Reviewing “closed, won’t fix” issues to see if can reopen and reassign at this point
- Field and NYBG also have interns/volunteers
Other questions?
Marty improving BHL records that Serial Solutions provides?
Martin will share test batch with Marty for input
One issue was aggregating under serial title
Inching along
Frequency of grabbing from BHL?
We would like them to purge everything and then once we have a good mapping, can see about frequency
If others are interested in doing similar, who should put in contact with?
Hold off for now
Don – we use Opensource CUFTS, third party vendor, annual subscription and they manage data for us and they set up platform, version is called TrueSerials
Martin – new membership process, that was worked on in May, EC and Subcommittee had finalized and approved and is now on public wiki, at the bottom of the About page:
