Goals of interlinking
- Drive traffic to BHL - measurable action based on web site analytics
- Improving content in Wikipedia
- Make Wikipedia users aware of BHL as a repository
Wiki Tool to find all links across Wikipedia Language sites linking back to BHL
Kinds of links/content to promote
- Original descriptions of organisms
- External links to "names bibliography" for an organism

Wikipedia editing guidelines
Whats more effective – links within articles or external links? Community best practice is that links within articles should be to other Wikipedia pages not to external links.
How to decide what to edit in Wikipedia – could look at Top 5000 search links for Wikipedia (
see Chris’s blog post) to see what species, authors, concepts we should focus on
Taxobox – where you can edit the taxonomic info that displays in the box to the right of the page
[[ = links to wikipedia page“xx”= italics[xx]=external linkReferences – footnote, references within the pageExternal Links – more info on this topicFor external links to book or journal use the forms below or choose the

- ^ Cite book|last=Linnaeus |first=Carolus |authorlink=Carl Linnaeus |title=Systema naturae per regna tria naturae :secundum classes, ordines, genera, species, cum characteribus, differentiis, synonymis, locis. |publisher=Holmiae (Laurentii Salvii) |year=1758 |page=41 |url=http://www.biodiversitylibrary.org/page/726936 |accessdate=8 September 2008 |language=Latin |volume=1 |edition=10th
Keep in mind
- In early stages of editing its better to add content than to edit existing content (otherwise the Wikipedia reviewers might think its suspicious)
- For species names let’s just link from the accepted binomial and not link from all of the synonyms
Questions
When citing a book and entering the author’s name do we use the form of name from BHL, Tropicos or Wikipedia?e.g.
Same with title - use title from book or common title?
- Use common titles e.g. Species Plantarum
- authoritative title e.g. Caroli Linnaei ... Species plantarum :exhibentes plantas rite cognitas, ad genera relatas, cum differentiis specificis, nominibus trivialibus, synonymis selectis, locis natalibus, secundum systema sexuale digestas...
