On call: Leora and Alicia, Trish and Ari, Carolyn, Richard and Marissa, Pam, Joe and Katie, Connie, Martin

Agenda

Resident updates
Alicia: communicating with Dmitry from Global Names, Dmitry modifying tool, passed 3 million names, code written to analyze and get unique names and all names by kingdom. Wikispecies--from BHL scientific name status and GN tool has wikispecies as one of data sources. Can id what is in and what is not. So BHL can add citations to what is there and both for what is not there. Not sure how to do this. Wikispecies and Wikidata users have some issues. She will talk more with Rod Page.
Marissa: to seattle for nedcc digital directions meeting, working with Europeana tools, modular; Trove and digital New Zealand are good; functional website and data collection site
Ari: crowdsourcing interviews; some not doing it anymore but some are helpful. Talked with Michelle Marshall and have some strong arguments about moving BHL images forward; talked with Grace about flickr and Megan (SI transcription center); taxonomic use of illustrations. Paying attention but doing other things.
Pam: Analyzing individual survey data, lots of open ended; finalizing system user and collaborator surveys; Confirming what we thought about users--about half scientists/taxonomists; largest use for scholarly work and species; download options popular. 75% of respondents at least 1/month and 60% once a week.
Katie: focusing on writing final paper outline and presentation; proof of concept and experimenting with from the page: looking at data exports to see if they can work with BHL data source model; working on adding BHL data to wikidata (authors, creators); Others are interested in adding data, too, once creator ids are done; help to expose BHL data. Ari and Alicia working on this too.

Mentor updates:
Carolyn: Pam and Carolyn have been discussing how to characterize the data, especially open-ended. Carolyn has been getting things in order for Tech meeting.
Leora: Alicia will be featured in the next issue of the member magazine. Full page color spread about the grant! Leora submitted an NEH grant for digitizing and conserving rare books.
Richard: some challenges--Marissa has been helping with upload of NHM journal--complete. Article level searchable in BHL. Helps her with understanding of the kinds of enhancements needed for BHL. Looking at overlay Altmetric analysis but cost is too much for the URL tracking (custom). Will be talking with Grace. Floods at TarPits (!). CLIR grant proposal paperwork.

Trish: Ari and Trish did presentation at visualizing workshop. Some game/web designers interested in Science Gossip site.
Connie/Joe: CLIR field note project; transcriptions. looking forward to seeing how we can get the transcriptions/tags and other data into BHL. Finding so much interesting data in field notes. And also for Harvard.
Networking event to bring us all together.
January gathering? Final talks?

Tech meeting! TechMeeting_Sept2017 Discuss technical issues. Where do we go? Carolyn noted that there is a link to the housing brochure. Directions to pick up the keys are in the brochure. Print out the brochure with a map. Arriving after hours, security folks drive you to Trelease. Share your travel plans in the wiki page.
What are the expectations for the mentors? What should we be prepared to do or say? Working on framework for final report?

Trish is asking for a draft to review to help focus.

Martin noted that this should not be a training session for tech development. Don't want to spend too much time explaining things to people.

Understanding what we have found so far. Exploration of possibilities.

Draft priorities and strategic plan for technical development should come out of this set of presentations and discussions.
