Suggested Accommodations (from Ely Wallis)
Here are some accommodation options for the BHL Global meeting next year. I’ve only picked out a few places where I know visitors to the museum have stayed in the past. But if you look on Google Maps for ‘accommodation near Melbourne Museum’ you’ll see that there are many, many options. The Museum and the venue for the VALA conference are at diagonally opposite ends of the CBD but there are public transport options (trams 95, 96) that go between the two, so it will be possible to stay in one place and reach both venues if you don’t mind negotiating public transport. The tram trip between the two plus waiting and walking at either end will take about 30 minutes.
- Quest Apartments, Royal Gardens are across the road from Melbourne Museum (1 minute walk). See http://www.questapartments.com.au/Accommodation/62/australia/melbourne_cbd_fringe/quest_royal_gardens/welcome.aspx
- The Nunnery, is almost across the road from Melbourne Museum (2 minute walk). Chris Freeland and Martin Kalfatovic have stayed there before. Quirky! http://www.nunnery.com.au/
- The Metropole Hotel Apartments is about a 5-10 minute walk to Melbourne Museum and is at the top end of one of the interesting eating and shopping strips of Melbourne, called Brunswick Street. http://www.metropole.org/
- Brooklyn Arts Hotel is about 15 minutes walk from Melbourne Museum. Ed Rodley has stayed there. Also quirky. http://www.brooklynartshotel.com.au/
- Quest Gordon Place, at the top end of Chinatown. Melbourne has an extensive Chinatown precinct – see http://chinatownmelbourne.com.au/ It may interest our friends from China to stay close to there. It would be a 10-15 minute walk to Melbourne Museum.
- Best Western Plus Travel-Inn, is close to our Italian precinct of Lygon Street and about a 10 minute walk to Melbourne Museum. http://www.thetravelinn.com.au/the-travel-inn-accommodation-melbourne.php
- Mantra on the Park, is on the edge of the CBD and a 5 minute walk through a park to Melbourne Museum. http://www.mantra.com.au/victoria/melbourne-and-surrounds/melbourne/accommodation/hotels/mantra-on-the-park/
- Hotel Grand Chancellor, is further into the CBD and a 15 minute walk to Melbourne Museum. It’s close to Chinatown, but not in Chinatown. http://www.grandchancellorhotels.com/au/melbourne/
- The Hotel Windsor, is definitely not the budget option, but a lovely place to stay. It would be a tram ride to Melbourne Museum or about a 20 minute walk. http://www.thehotelwindsor.com.au/
