Use Cases for items needing multiple MARC records
What are the scenarios where 1 item requires the association of multiple titles, i.e. MARC records?
What do users want?
What are the various ways in which users discover content re: something like Fieldiana?
- User knows the monographic title and searches on that
- Ideally, the user should already know that what they want is part of Fieldiana b/c their citation SHOULD say so, but we all know...
- The user may discover that their monograph is part of Fieldiana through a series statement or note -- is it enough to simply make this a clickable option that takes them to the MARC record for the serial?
- - The only problem this poses in relation to primary and secondary titles is, if we have the monographic record as the secondary title, and the user only has the monographic title but doesn't know to click "show secondary titles" in advanced search, they will never discover the entry for the monograph in the portal in the first place to be able to click on a series statement. If we make the monographs the primary titles, but another user enters the portal and wants to search "fieldiana," nothing will come up unless the click the "show secondary titles" option in the advanced search screen is clicked...
- User knows that what they want is part of Fieldiana, but doesn't know the exact vol. or monograph title
- User wants to browse within the Fieldiana series for something related to their area of interest
The serial record should display all the volumes/monographs within the run -- how does this look then? We discussed this briefly in the BHL Staff meeting and said we needed a Notes field to accommodate this. In this case it would look like:
Fieldiana Geology
- Monograph title 1
- Note: vol. 1 of Fieldiana Geology
- Monograph title 2
- Note: vol. 2 of Fieldiana Geology
[Note: the user only sees the note if they click on "show details for volume"]

What about analytics?
Are they related to this issue?-

Dec 3, 2009My digitally immigrated self had this momentary lapse. Analytics? What do Google analytics have to do with MARC records and associated multiple titles. Oops. Then I remembered....
Bound-withs
-
Dec 2, 2009 I understand that bound-withs should be provided in the portal as separate intellectual units with their own barcodes and MARC records but for those bound-withs that are not treated in this way, we need to address the lacking MARC record via portal editing.
Monographic series
- Fieldiana -- currently there are no records for the Fieldiana serial titles, only monographic records exist
- Bulletin of the MCZ
- Memoirs of the MCZ
- Das Tierreich - currently only monographic records exist, needs a series record
- Fauna und flora des golfes von Naepel - currently only monographic records exist, needs a series record
- US Exploration has issues. http://www.biodiversitylibrary.org/bibliography/38024 is a title and it needs the series over all record. (I think there are others)
- - Dec 4, 2009 Permissions title: http://biodiversitylibrary.org/item/55046 is part of http://biodiversitylibrary.org/bibliography/4050 I believe. I completed a portal edit just now associating the series statement for the item with the Misc. Pubs of KU title record
- Fauna und Flora des Golfes von Neapel http://www.biodiversitylibrary.org/bibliography/10537 - Dec 9, 2009 at one point a user requested vol. 22 and it was very difficult for me to figure out what was going on based on:
- "Now, I have a major request: Could you make the following volume available: Bürger, O. 1895. Nemertini. Fauna und Flora des Golfes von Neapel. 22: 1--741. (Another volume, 34 of the series you have already.)"
- The Siboga Expedition -- I believe this is the serial record in BHL here http://www.biodiversitylibrary.org/bibliography/6557; SIL has also contributed many monographs, just search for "Siboga" in BHL
- University of Kansas publications -- need to upload serial records and associate monographic titles:
- Monographs of the Museum of Natural History
- Special Publications of the Museum of Natural History
- Scientific Papers of the Natural History Museum
Serials w/ "seps"
Serials that have separate volumes cataloged as "seps"

Dec 3, 2009 How is this different than a monographic series? Is it that the "seps" don't include a series statement? Regardless of how they're cataloged, shouldn't users be able to come across the "seps" and know that they're also part of a serial?
Messy one:
Biologia Centrali-Americana
is for the entire set:
http://www.biodiversitylibrary.org/bibliography/730
but each section can have a separate marc record to identify it: a marc record for the aves volumes, one for the botany volumes, etc. - they have separate authors etc and have stand alone marc records and are cited in various ways. For example:
