TechCall_23may2016
Action Items
- Mike has the green light to begin implementing Contributor changes (see below for more details on Segment and Title contributors; Susan is updating a Gemini issue that will also provide details on Item contributors)
- Joel will ask Carolyn for MOU info
- Martin will follow up with Nicole Kearney -- is the content already in BHL? If so, are the articles in question already defined in BHL? are there existing DOIs which would be provided and added to BHL, or looking for new DOIs to be assigned?
- Mike will send Martin details of where transcription discussion left off Transcriptions+Task+Group
Agenda & Notes
- Contributor changes for segment metadata
- Call it 'Segment Contributor' in Macaw and Admin Dash 7 agreed (example of how it looks now)
- Macaw will be on hold.
- Admin Dash: leave as Contributor. Instead, make repeatable. Policy - keep to 2 contributors.
- On the public site, display as 'Contributor' at the segment level 7 agreed
- Title Contributor - don't need to include; can adjust as per MRK's and Mike's discussion. No issues anticipated with OAI. OAI delivers both item and title. Not required at Title level for OAI. Keep Contributors at Title level and not make any changes at this time. Will provide all contributors, pulled from Items, at Title level via OAI. Not changing what is displayed on website
- Update on Move (Joel) - new request for MOUs. will also follow up with privacy specialists.
- DOIs at article level - request from BHL Australia (see msg from Nicole Kearney for more detail).
- Tech Priorities: Confirm top priorities for this quarter (April - June) and planning for next quarter (July - September):
- Contributor field - end of June
- BHL Move - end of June
- Incorporation of Transcriptions - 3rd Quarter. Mike will send around documentation of where left off. Will not address versioning until after move is complete.
- Full text search - identify requirements / implementation plan - written some code to run against Solr and ElasticSearch (hopefully end of September)
- DOIs at article level - more of a policy issue than tech issue; may require minor tweaks
For next week, we will review Gemini 56804.
Transcriptions -- Remaining question is about version control. We weren't going to address version control until after the Move was complete. Mike will send documentation to Martin.
NYBG rec'd NEH grant for scanning and transcribing John Torrey. Begins July 1, using FromThePage. Earliest we would want to add to BHL would be Jan 2017.
Martin: We'll also want to make sure output requirements are defined to align with what BHL ends up ingesting.
DOIs at article level - fairly straightforward.
First step - article defined, then DOI assigned.
Are the articles in question already defined in BHL?
Do not think that they are
She may have also wanted Articlization by BHL
MRK will follow up for clarification
DOI is on hold while we address other issues
Would like to use their set as next test set
Can be an as-requested process
Would they be giving us any existing DOIs or would these be new DOIs?
Pretty certain new DOIs and will verify
Is the content already in BHL?
Probably but possibly not article level
We may find we need two different workflows for two different situations
Carolyn will wait until MRK hears back from Nicole to add to an upcoming Tech Call agenda
Diacritics -
Keri showed Joel where Daniel does his work. Bianca has offered to set up a call with Jude and Kelly to see if we can sort it out. Something changed and diacritics became a problem. So hopefully can address for everyone soon. So stay tuned.
Regarding DOIs at article level
From Nicole Kearney, Museum Victoria, 23 May 2016:
We are very keen for discussions (and action) about articles and DOIs to start as soon as possible. I have just presented at the Atlas of Living Australia Science Symposium, which was attended by the Australian scientific and taxonomic community, many of whom are BHL users.
I spoke about the need to link the scientific names in our taxonomic databasesto the taxonomic literature online. These databases (Australian Faunal Directory, AFD, and Australian Plant Names Index, APNI) include citations tothe literature for first descriptionsand subsequent revisions, but at the moment these citations are just flat links. And yet, a huge proportion of this literature is in BHL. The day before my presentation APNI made live a field for adding links to literature in BHL. My announcement of this at the symposium was met with loud applause (there was even some whooping).
I also announced that, as of last month,GBIF is now linking to literature for plant names. Rod Page's recent blog post said that he has now added 120,000 links. I asked him if any were to BHL articles (as I would have liked to use a BHL example in my talk), but he said no.
In order for GBIF and APNI to continue this wonderful work, the heritage literature in BHL must be presented in a way that allows for linking to individual articles and these articles must have unique and persistent DOIs.
Please let us know how we can assist with this process. We’re happy to help in any way we can.
Kind regards, Nicole
