Notes
Status update on BHL move
Nothing new since last update; still waiting to hear from SI Legal Dept for go ahead. Joel will be away but checking email. Mike is not planning to take spring vacation.
Status updates on prior action items:
Z39.50 and Diacritics: Susan looked at foreign language materials and don’t see any problems. Susan provided examples and Jude said they’ll look into diacritics issue. Susan will email Keri to better understand how Z39.50 is working at SI.
Articles & Author Names: Could require a substantial amount of effort.
Susan: Issue is that with the current model we can’t with complete certainty ensure that the preferred author name will match how it appeared at the time of publication. Discovery Tools Working Group are getting ready to produce sample JATS for BHL that OCLC can evaluate. There is a small chance that it will give a name that is different.
Trish: What if it’s not in preferred form? Will OCLC reject it?
Susan: Probably not. Also, Discovery Tools is nearing completion on the mapping.
Trish: We’re not sure if this is something we can resolve now. Perhaps we should just try to address if it becomes an issue with OCLC.
Mike: We could keep track of which form was used but we can’t accommodate that in the current data model. If we decide to pursue, this would be a new Gemini issue. Let’s not create any issues until we investigate further and determine if this is something we would actually like to pursue.
Susan: At EABL Boot Camp, we determined that to achieve our numbers, we’ll need to define a lot of articles.
Susan will talk to Bianca about the Cataloging Working Group and preferred use of author names vs name at time of publication.
BioStor & Issue Metadata: Rod replied to Susan’s message about issue metadata. He believes that in the future scholars will use DOIs exclusively, thus issue and volume details will become obsolete. However, if we want to provide Issue metadata in RIS files, he would use it. Probably not worth it at this point to pursue further. For EABL, when we define articles we will include issue numbers when available.
Contributor and Licensor: Mariah and Susan talked with Joel about how to set up Macaw accounts for EABL. Would like to discuss making Contributor and Licensor controlled vocabularies in BHL (for when Joel and Mike are both on call).
