Agenda

Notes
Martin, Mike, Joel, Susan, Carolyn, Bianca, Adam

(Note: Adam also provided a closing Report on the DTWG, pasted at end of this message)

DTWG Started in March 2015, Charged until Dec with improving title and article level metadata created and sent to discovery layers and knowledge bases, etc.

Essentially, involved a lot of mapping between standards.

Group completed all analysis for MODS for DPLA
Completed for NISO KBART
Completed all the analysis for JATS formatted article level feed for BHL.

Analyzed for title list and coverage info from content provider to knowledge base.
Ran into some impedance between what’s available in BHL and what KBART requires.

Did some research on article level feed, settled on JATS format for article level. All notes, files, from the Group are all available on wiki

We’re now bringing the task force to a close and handing over the remaining work required in the database and software to the Technical Advisors.

We realize it sounds like an awful lot of work but it is what’s used by the industry.

Mike: It would allow BHL to do other things, too, including improving quality of receipt of open URLs.

Bianca: Only thing I would add is we did manage to complete MODS
We can do JATS now. KBART does require these edits to take place before we can move forward. MODS – helps with DPLA. JATS -- helps with OCLC, could also be used by ProQuest and Summon.

Some of these Gemini tickets do have broader scope than just KBART. They can address other problems with how the Admin site currently works.

What we’re asking the Technical Advisors to do now is to prioritize in whatever way you feel is appropriate

The Tech Group will need to sketch out what is feasible to do in various timeframes.
Summon integration can’t be done appropriately until alignment with KBART requirements is squared away.

Martin: We will want to review in conjunction with other tech priorities and where it falls on the spectrum.

Susan: The EABL group taking ownership for the article level metadata so JATS is something Susan and Trish already signed up for.

The big question is how/when we want to move forward on the KBART one.

Where else we can feed our MODS?
People haven’t always followed the right MODS feed

We foresee some challenges with implementing full text search.

Mike: There would be times when I could do them in parallel. Not sure yet how much but some could be done in parallel.

DPLA will be reviewing our MODS in April.

Adam: My observation from coming in from a new angle is that BHL has, as a digitization project, had a lot of focus on the digitization process and then on the website. Then, in terms of metadata, once it gets into the system there aren’t the resources in terms of managing, improving, and enhancing it. That’s something we do a lot of at Cornell and it’s something that looking strategically ahead to BHL’s version 2.0, BHL has an opportunity to think about in terms of resources and managing that metadata part.

Artworks issues
Bianca will turn into response to Collections Committee discussion. Clarified minutes from last call.

Mike and Joel:
Found some items not getting into BHL because of the OCR issues.
Some field notes, about 6 items not getting in right now because of this.
Some validation, pages with scanned data file and number of pages in OCR. Will try again and follow up offline if continues.

DTWG Final Report

The BHL Discovery Tools Task Force met bi-weekly (22 times) over Webex from March 2015 - March 2016. Meeting notes and all the group's documents are available on the project wiki page: DiscoveryTools

Focus of the group's effort was on improving the title and article level metadata that BHL makes available to discovery systems and knowledge bases. The group feels it has accomplished all it can as constituted and that the outstanding work should be passed along to the Technical Advisory Group.
