TechCall_12june2017
Agenda & Notes
Attending: Martin Kalfatovic, Joel Richard, Pam McClanahan, Susan Lynch, Trish, and Mike
- Creating segments from user-supplied PDF metadata – What is the current status of this? Are there still conversations happening? Came up in EABL- for when Martin and Susan are available to finalize
Some valid articles definitely in there but also some that would look like valid articles that are in fact not. Anything with a single word as title would be eliminated. What to do with single word author? Also, concerned about use or lack thereof in terms of authorized form of the author names. Cataloging group was even more concerned about that.
Some users download only a few pages and not the entire articles.
Sometimes with lengthy article titles users will abbreviate, i.e., pluck a few keywords and submit as abbreviated title.
Sometimes users enter journal name where we expect article name.
Rec 1: If extremely cautious with metadata and discard even slightly questionable metadata. If we were not going to apply sub-standard metadata.
Martin -- not comfortable deciding on a case-by-case basis.
Trish - when review was conducted 3-4 years ago, it seemed good enough. Agree that there are issues appearing in Susan's examples but not sure how representative those are at this point.
Rec 2: Throw it all out and not use it.
We should stop asking users to fill it out if we're not going to use it. Maybe something for their own use.
Martin will decide at end of June.
- OAI ResourceSync – This is a new standard from the same folks that created OAI-PMH… in fact ResourceSync is a replacement for PMH (Protocol for Metadata Harvesting). I emailed the tech group on May 12 to see if anyone had heard about ResourceSync, or if there have been any rumblings within BHL about implementing it. I did not receive a response
- Hub Call - group in St Louis working in tech and cultural heritage, someone on the list mentioned ResourceSync. For discussion with Martin
Consider this as something to monitor and be aware of for implementation down the road.
Is it possible to implement simultaneously?
Imagine we would need to as it will take time for community to adopt.
No need for us to jump on; doesn't need to be part of the six month plan.
Add to Gemini
- BHL Tech Vision document (Martin)
Connie and Martin are working on this to guide work and fit into BHL Strategic Plan that will launch March 2018. Will be sharing with this group very soon for input.
Timeline for Strategic Plan:
- Draft of plan will be initiated by Jane with support from Carolyn
- Presented to EC in late August
- Presented to Members in October
- Subcommittee will form to draft new Plan for presentation to Members in March 2018
How does it fit into Tech Meeting in September?
Probably good timing. That first draft will be available to us.
Keri Thompson (SIL) will join us.
Ricc Ferrante (Smithsonian Archives) may join us as well
Kelli Trei may send someone from UIUC
Agenda to be finalized.
