DRAFT (Carolyn)
The Biodiversity Heritage Library is committed to continuously improving access and discoverability of the open access biodiversity literature and archives available at
https://www.biodiversitylibrary.org/. Thanks to the input of numerous BHL users, partners, and other stakeholders, BHL has identified a number of top priorities to enhance the user experience. As we have a very small team of dedicated staff for technical development efforts, we must focus our limited resources on one or two priorities at a time. Our current top two technical priorities are implementing full text search and incorporating already transcribed files collected through partner tools such as the Smithsonian Transcription Center, FromThePage, and DigiVol.
We have been very pleased that others in the community have expressed interest not only in seeing these and other enhancements happen but some have also offered to contribute their time and expertise. Although our small staff and current priorities prevent us from pursuing most collaborative efforts, we do welcome any and all suggestions and will review them as time allows. These can be especially important as we move to new priorities in the future. We also encourage anyone to download and use BHL data and content for their own projects and to let us know what you are working on. To share technical recommendations or the results of your own work processing or improving BHL data, please contact us:

- Milestones page on the wiki for public reference (joel)
Carolyn and her team have discussed this and determined that we do not have staff to maintain an up-to-date overview of our technical development efforts or to update a public-facing page every time priorities shift. Since we will not have a dedicated product manager, we will not have the staff to maintain a page with timelines and dates for our priorities. The above draft statement covers our current top two priorities.
- Better communication between Tech Team and Outreach (for fielding questions from Social media) (joel)
- Discuss FAQ with general topics to reduce workload for Outreach (grace, bianca)
- Discuss documentation for Name Finding algorithm, Ingest process, basic "How BHL Works" that could deflect some Social Media Questions
In order to create an FAQ, we will need to know what questions are frequently received. Carolyn has already discussed this with her staff and will work with them to determine how we want to track questions. One approach may be to filter questions that Grace doesn't know the answer to over to Gemini, where we can better track frequently asked questions. The above statement directs users to Gemini.
Susan - Wikidata - cleaning up creator names is really important and we don't have staff. We need a grant; WikiData - frame as something we’re doing.
Third party ie Backstage won't be as onerous
Susan - not just one-time cleanup. Examine ways data is coming in like OAI-PMH. think there are many facets to what needs to be done.
SIL looking at identifiers and authors across the board.
Gildas Illien very interested in personal and corporate identifiers. Working on a project at the Museum on that. Personal identifier meeting coming up in February. Suzanne Pilsk will attend on behalf of SIL.
Concerned as being not responsive to wikidata expert. Don't want to be perceived as stonewalling him.
Testing
Important to get people who are committed to testing.
MRK would like to set up appropriate input group.
Carolyn will follow up with Susan
- Security Settings (TLS1/1.1/1.2 and .NET version) (joel)
Version 4.5
Joel will follow up with Mike about this. It's a SQL server issue
Service packs, etc. Joel and Mike will investigate
