1. Update on COMPLETED IMLS Field Notebook grant proposal
- Completed Jan 31st 2:39pm for Feb 1st deadline.
- Accepted/confirmed/processed/picked up by granting agency
- 7 partner institutions - $350,000 IMLS funds with $350,000 matching
- Final package approx. 300 pgs long; contact Becky (rmorin@calacademy.org) if you need a copy
2. Update on current work being done on more user tutorials
- Grace – updating user tutorials and creating new ones
- Start with Botany (Robin) Librarian at Smithsonian about adding new ones.
- Tutorials should be more prominent location because they are hard to find. Prominent tab at top of portal.
- Video is good to watch but once it’s over need to flip back – print version of tutorial.
- People don’t remember/have given up by the time they are prompted to enter article information for CiteBank
- that should be first screen or let them know they need that info later
- Grace will ask Mike
- Users have trouble searching on the site, make a tutorial on the best way to search the site.
- Bianca – eliminate the tag cloud and put “search like this”
- Make it more apparent that we have hi resolution images for download.
- People aren’t finding it and want that.
- JSTOR doesn’t have it.
- Eliminate tag cloud to advertise new features/or hi res images?
- Bianca, do you hate the tag cloud?
- In the download book download – change to download hi res images?
Discussion
Becky – printable directions – good. People don’t want to watch a video.
Advanced search is a low priority – because BHL is mostly for machine to machine.
Citebank – has to be first stop – portal – Bianca is following up with Chris about how these work. Biana will talk to Chris once it’s released. Post IC meeting. Citebank version 0.1
Citebank.org new URL
Don @ NYBG – are we going to have instructions in other languages?
Good question for IC at meeting in March.
Group to work on tutorials – Becky, Connie, Grace, Erin
3. Update on staff tutorials created: see
Wiki Page
- Grace – 3 tutorials for portal editing – so use them
- Don- Can we add a link in the portal?
- Bianca will talk to Mike about this.
4. BHL Staff Email List - review for complete list of folks. Missing folks?
- It Works!
- Look at the list and tell Suzanne if anyone’s missing
DISCUSSION ITEMS
1. Non-biodiversity literature in BHL unpublish or not?
- Diane – has a project that is general oceanography so they have 450 non-relevant books because IA ingested to BHL. What do we do? Leave them? Or unpublish them?
- Martin – have a lot of non-biology (anthropology) greater scheme of things are 3rd tier ecosystem and keep it in there for now.
- Don, Bianca, Michelle, Grace, Christine @ Field, Matt, Becky – set up calls for Monday at 2pm for Collections Committee to talk about these things further.
2. How did IC respond to the “slush fund” idea for ILL/shipping/scanning/gap-filling?
- Christine brought up during Jan IC cal
- IC likes idea, thinks is important
- problem is administering the funds. CG will follow up with Tom about how to administer funds, could be an issue for SI. Amount not determined.
- Diane – could it be a sub-award? MBL might be able to do it. Christine will ask Tom about this.
3. Collection Development stuff
- If you wanna be part of this, join the MONDAY 2 PM Conference Calls. Email Bianca (lipscombb@si.edu) for more info.
4. BHL survey update
- Henning Scholz and Francisco Francisco Welter-Schultes (BHL Europe) had call with Bianca today
- Do a joint survey
- Put together questions and now working on getting survey out by mid March.
- Results need to be in for EOL steering committee by end of April.
- Issue survey and run for month – BHL Europe wants survey to run longer to get a wider user response (need more time for outreach) BHL Europe will offer consultation from a survey expert-person
- BHL Europe Survey Monkey – single link that leads to several translated surveys
- Broad and targeted dissemination
- BHL Europe - target Taxicom
- BHL US – target Gemini users put a link to the survey on the portal, link to survey as part of automated Gemini feedback email, post a link in the PDF email,
- Have another BHL E member help with survey dissemination.
- Becky – send survey to Natural History Collections listserv/SPNHC group
- Don – ALA science and technology group
- Bianca will send out an email asking for dissemination avenues
