September 18, 2007 BHL Executive Committee Notes

Graham reports from the EOL Steering Committee: Creative commons agreement needs to be modified; EOL
pages should have BHL scanning behind it--amphibia and the 12-14
species pages that are being developed, will have the species identified by the end of October.; Debate around special tools
like sea dragon--should have exemplar pages before including too many
tools. Don't want to be too clever too soon. Early model: eol web
pages located at MBL with possibilty of off site if overwhelmed. . EOL Board will have a meeting along side TED,
need to decide where to have the tech meeting near these dates. Tom will
sort out where the tech meeting will be--eol should have firm dates
by next week. Taxa Toy is very cool.

Tom: Christie is working to get the MOU signed. All other MOUs are
signed.
The Moore grant from IA -- Tom has and is reading.
Proposing a collections oriented meeting with Kew, Judy, Doug and
Susan to discuss botany specific concerns. Tom will be attending the
botany meeting at MOBOT in October. Cathy will communicate to OCLC
how urgent it is to get Harvard and NHM pushed up in the queue for
records. Refworks?? can be used for de-duping--maybe use for the
monograph lists. CEO has offered Refworks to 10 members of the
consortium, as far as we can tell. This will be a case where we are
using to proprietary software to process open source content.
for the literature tech person on eol informatics and bhl is moving through the process. The same is true for the Executive Director's position. Need to fund serials work--must find out how much money is needed. Harvard is
very conservative regarding copyright issues. Connie is working with
the Harvard counsel to be sure our BHL contributions pose an
acceptable risk.

Next conference call on Sept. 25, 11 am.
