SIL BHL Meeting 9
December 13, 2007 (Thursday)
- Washington Regional Scanning Center (Martin)
- Update on the discussions with the Library of Congress
- 10 Scribes are arriving at LC today (12/13); they are being unloaded by Robert Miller and IA staff will be in town early January to actually install the machines
- FEDLINK has (at last) an actual contract with IA; I will try and get a copy for us to all see
- FEDLINK overhead charges to SIL (this is the fee we pay FEDLINK for the contracting work, etc.) will be 0% for FY 2008; this percentage will increase in FY 2009 (the opening discussion number is 1% below the standard FEDLINK overhead fee, currently 7.75% - this seems high to me at this point and will be negotiated)
- Guestimate for delivery of books from SIL to LC if things all keep moving forward: March
- SIL BHL Scanning Center Update (Martin)
- Status of the Scribe at SIL
- The SIL Scribe will be at NMNH for the foreseeable future; Robert will get me some information on how much of our TSP time we have used
- Staffing the Scribe
- New IA staff person: Dan!
- BHL Publicity (Martin)
- Report on meeting with Entomology Dept.
- A very successful meeting; Gil Taylor was our master of ceremonies and Terry Irwin was a big cheerleader for the project. About 30 people came and asked a number of great questions. Suzanne followed up with some of the questioners on specific topics related to BHL, Staff Bibliography, and the Smithsonian Digital Repository
- SIL BHL Open House (December 6, 2007, in conjunction with the Cookie Exchange)
- A number of SIL staff dropped by to see the Scribe in operation; there will be pictures in a forthcoming Conduit
- Workflow
- Monograph de-duping process (Keri)
- SIL use of the bid list
- Suzanne is the current point person to bid on any serials
- Stickers! question - should all copies of a title get a sticker, or just the item that was actually scanned?
- Just the copy that was scanned and not trying to find all the other copies in the SIL system
- Other Technical
- Export profile for non-Ent titles
- Adding NH titles etc to the picklist
- There are a few titles that I would like to add to the mix for various reasons (Martin)
- Specific Titles:
- List from Betsy and Michael - the flying ants list.
- Title from Chris Thompson, Tom Orrell and Mike Ruggiero (of ITIS) "Catalog of hymenoptera in America north of Mexio"
- Use of the WonderFetch(tm)
- Jae Mauthe and Robert Miller have both seen the WonderFetch(tm) in action and have approved it in principle; SIL will work with IA staff to implement at SIL; this will be followed by an implementation at the Boston Public Library facility; then NYPL; followed by LC (the other smaller centers - UIUC and UNC can join in as they like); we need to determine where NHM falls in this mix
