Title Merges at times result in transposed MARC records (i.e. the MARC record you intended to keep is replaced by the other title's MARC record). This problem is due to the fact that IA treats every item as a title having its own MARC. When translated to our dbase at MOBOT, the same holds true except that we've structured our data to display the items correctly in relation to their title association. When 2 titles are merged, there are in fact many MARC records in the pool (again, 1 for ea. item) and a MARC record is chosen at random to represent the title. There is no way @ present to choose which MARC record should be selected from the myriad MARC records available. Mike L. is aware of this issue and says: "I have identified a way to fix the problem, but it's a long term thing; not something that can be implemented short-term."

2. http://www.biodiversitylibrary.org/bibliography/8518 for BULLETIN OF THE NATURAL HISTORY SOCIETY OF NEW BRUNSWICK. Only the last two items on the list of “volumes” belong to this journal. All the others are from an entirely different and important German journal.
Mike L. from MOBOT graciously fixed the Bulletin of the Natural History Society of New Brunswick and Zoologische Jahrbucher: Abteilung fur Anatomie und Ontogenie der Tiere” titles for us. They should be listed separately now. (3/5/09)

6. This is an FYI and user feedback on how one of the volumes of the Contribution is organized in BHL
Volume 35 is in five parts and people request it by parts, the parts were printed separately and then bound together. Volume 35 is requested by its part by some users as you see below. In this case Alice Tangerini is comparing the original artwork she has in Botany to what was published in Volume 35 part 2 for inventory/documentation purposes.

Anyway, the way the volume was scanned and organized it appears as a continuous run and I had to work with a print copy of the Volume in order to figure when part 2 began and ended—you see that in my email. Also, the table of contents in Part 2 doesn’t match the pages scanned. Page 210 is listed but is a blank page and the index begins on page 211. While I can see why 210 isn’t listed, there should be something indicating it is intentional blank and not something missed by scanning. I’m lucky because I can pull the print and work with it but others using the Contributions may not be able to do this.

Right now, all volumes are as they were bound in the set scanned, so we don’t break out issues or parts – this is a known problem/issue.

I’m more concerned about how you say the TOC doesn’t match the scans … is something mixed up? We can fix that if it’s a problem. Doug Holland still has the originals (from SIL) that were scanned stored at MOBOT.

Also, I would recommend looking at the same volume in the BHL portal (http://biodiversitylibrary.org/item/13795); that will enable you to download the part as a single PDF, rather than the entire volume (you’ll still have to suss out where it starts/stops though).

And, to add to the confusion, the SIL version of the US Herbarium site will be ready shortly so there will be THREE interface options (same scans though)!

DUPLICATE RECORDS TO BE COMBINED. TITLE MISSPELLINGS.

15. The first item -- Magasin de Zoologie : d'anatomie comparée et de palaeontologie (from Natural History Museum, London) confuses at least two titles: see our catalog records #368008, #786006 which cover this title for the eight volumes published from 1831 to 1839. This BHL entry uses the subtitle from the succeeding title and mixes volumes from the 1831 to 1839 title with those from the successor title, bib# 368007, 1839 to 1845. The volumes are in no order in the BHL listing and lack year designations. Text pages lack numbers in the scroll on the left—just “text” repeated endlessly—and no indication of issue numbers in the scroll.

The second item -- Revue et magasin de zoologie pure et, 1849 - , was done by SIL. See bib# 465106. Messy volume listing with no numbers, no years and just repeated “No Volume Designation.” Pages scrolls lack indications of plates. Simply the word “text” is repeated endlessly at the ends of the volumes.

The third item -- Revue et magasin de zoologie pure et appliquée. recueil mensuel ... Par ... F. E. Guérin-Méneville, again came from the Natural History Museum, London, scanners. This duplicates the previous item from SIL. No years attached to volume number listing. Volume numbering different than previous item. Plates not identified on scroll.

Gigantic preview scans with a tiny thumbnail on the right—is this some new way of presenting things in preview mode? Very odd. You can shrink the item with the minus sign but why should one have to? Why should preview mode start with the image blown up to King Kong size?
