October 2 2014 Executive Committee
On Call: Martin, Nancy, Susan, William, Connie
Connie reported on the BHL Global meeting in London where there were discussions of getting more Europe content into BHL. They are working on a strategic plan and will be in touch with Grace about increasing use of Social media. Jurge (sp) indicated they want the content available in the BHL Europe portal first --but there are challenges in the ingest process. They have a unique protocol so content cannot be easily ingested. Jane Smith offered to facilitate getting a volunteer application to assist in getting content from European content into the BHL. There is a problem getting the records ingested due to "data" problems ( i.e inconsistent data and method of delivery.) There is some concern about the use of the term BHL central seeming to be too US centric. BHL Europe make take a two pronged approach 1- getting existing BHL portal content into the IA and 2 getting new content into IA. Jurge and others would like to see a portal that offers access to all global nodes. Discussion on the possibility of using the collection tab or create a global nodes tab to create separate collections. it was agreed that is was very worthwhile to have Connie attend that meeting as she served as a good faciliatator.
Martin asked that the membership be encouraged to review the MOU and Erics suggestions so we can have a discussion at the next Members meeting on Oct. 23. He will send it around again as a reminder.
EOL is meeting in Mexico City in March and it might be a good opportunity to get something going with CONABIO.
William gave an update on Mining Biodiversity indicating the survey is complete and will be working with a focus group over the next two weeks -- Zooniverse offered to help and are using the data - interested in the Artof Life image and have already created a supplemental add-on. The Purposeful Gaming consultants have already created two games -- one for non-gamers and the other for serious gamers. Connie is about to hire an intern to start outreach and transcription as part of the project.
Susan and Martin breifly spoke about following up on affiliate memberships using the GBIF application model -- Both will follow-up on their respective assignments including
CBHL, Smithsonian Archives, CRL, CDL (UC Davis?), Brown Univeristy, GBIF, JSTOR and Univ. of South Hampton(?).
