October 19, 2010 BHL Executive Committee notes

BHL Executive Committee Conference Call 19 October 11 a.m. edt
Tom Garnett, Connie Rinaldo, Chris Freeland

Agenda

A. China trip: Chris, Keri and Martin had to switch dates. Working on the accommodations. Meeting with Institute of Botany--goal is to cover global governance, distribution of content and scanning workflow on Nov 15-17. A pre-trip conference call would be helpful. Chris will give a seminar about MOBOT's Institute for Bioinformatics.

B. Darwin Library meetings: Met with David Kohn (AMNH), Nick Gill (Cambridge U) (Darwin scholars) and Grant Young (Cambridge U. Library) and Jane Smith. Received first load of content but still working on licensing issues. Grant has reviewed the agreement with BHL and he thought they could sign it but hasn't happened. Discussed interface design (Mike L). There is content being scanned at Cambridge that will be shipped to MOBOT for loading, NHM scanning through IA. User interface is on schedule and should be wrapped up within 10 weeks. Discussed a possible phase 2 project to add more content. This is a niche, not production, environment so the technical interface may not be generalizable. BHL should only participate in content, not necessarily technical developments if they are not generalizable. Should be something to demonstrate by the end of the year.

C. CrossRef and DOIs: postponed. A little history...DOIs don't fit the EOL model. But if EOL purchased DOIs we can use them. For non-published material, DOIs cost more because of additional services. Cost model for BHL is much cheaper. Smithsonian will continue to work on legal agreements and BHL to become a member of Cross-Ref. Have a meeting next year with Cross-ref and others like Bob Morris, James Macklin. Get feedback from others like Rod Page. First work will be testing and developing a realistic position on DOIs.

D. Internet Archive meeting (hasn't happened yet). Martin will be discussing Chinese OCR with Brewster and George at Open Library.

E. BHL-Europe upcoming meetings

Chris is being funded to go to Dec BHL Europe. Phil might go as well. Tom requested funding for Bianca and Grace for Dec meeting where best practices and GRIB will be discussed as well but there is none. Tom should push to have Bianca funded for the GRIB discussion.

Linz Best Practices workshop: Connie will attend. ACTION Tom to arrange a pre-trip call with Bianca, Grace and Keri to be sure Connie has all pertinent information.

F. Chris will talk with Noha about shipping BHL content to Egypt and meeting in January 24-26.

G. William Ulate is creating a master calendar.
