OCA PDS 1
OCA Page Delivery System Call
January 31, 2008
FYI. I was on the LC initiated call yesterday on the planned development of an open source page turning - though what they really mean is a page delivery system (PDS).
It was an interesting call with myself, Mike Handy (LC), Aaron C. (LC), Michael Stelmach (LC), Tim Cole (UIUC), Leah Prescott (Getty), and Robert Miller (IA) online.
Key points:
- everyone has a different view of what a page delivery system (PDS) SHOULD be (everyone)
- various standards and development papers should go along with the creation of the product (that was mostly Michael S.)
- there should be rapid development of core functions in an open source environment that will allow others to build more (Martin and Michael S.)
- creation of a JP2000 open source decoder/server is a priority (Martin)
- the flippy book from IA is an interesting start (Robert)
- a collaboration tool is needed (Basecamp, wiki, or something, LC will set this up)
There was also a feeling that BLC should have someone on the calls. Martin Kalfatovic nominated Maura Marx. The calls will be open, so the more the merrier.
The current plan is for weekly calls on Thursday at 2 pm eastern (these will be coordinated by LC).
Impressions:
- LC is interested in being in the driver seat (since they have the Sloan funding for this), but want lots of input from others
- There is a desire for rapid development, but there are many lumbering beasts involved all riding on large ships that don’t make quick turns
- Any basic lowest common denominator PDS will be useful for many items, but not serve BHL needs
