November 29, 2007 BHL Executive Committee Notes
Biodiversity Heritage Library Executive Committee Conference Call November 29, 2007 Minutes
Cathy- meeting at BPL. harvester using Ruby on Rails, exciting, OAI and grabs stuff from IA gets vol #, metadata source. Serials are still a problem. Chris should contact the developer before he meets with Tim Cole and Brewster because it may be helpful. IA slow, OAI doesn't work all the time; not recovered from hack. Where are we on ISBN--if there is something pre 1923 and you get an ISBN, does your library become the publisher? Ugly and Bowker not prepared to answer questions. Exec Comm needs to review contract.
Connie- First batch of material packed up and going today or tomorrow, contract almost ready
Tom--Chromis: drafted email to Rich Pyle informing him about what we will do about bibliography; volumes move to head of BHL lists so that they can be done by Jan 1, already scanned articles with permission go into MBL repository. Some are oversized or have too-large fold outs so there may be some boutique scanning
Cathy is setting up a new group in institutional repository for BHL. George Thoma from NLM has been working on serials issues
Tom--workshop possibly funded by Moore foundation regarding markup proposal has been submitted; suggestion to add Tom Moritz. EOL institutional council meetings last few days--good issues regarding oversight and how big it will get. Relating to BHL: John Fitzpatrick (Cornell Ornithol. Labs) was there and they have a premier citizen science site--very excited about EOL and BHL. They will be working on a Datanet proposal with JHU. NSDL group involved too. Outreach to other initiatives, particularly Europe, Asia, Australia, should happen early even if not ready! Institutional Council will meet at least once a year and maybe adding new members and creating subgroups. May be a subgroup to be an advisory group to BHL. Might be a good thing, especially if add international members. These people can become spokespeople for BHL in their countries.
Graham and Chris will be in Berlin 10-14th December for technology review--Chris will demo features.
Tom has been working with AMNH on MOU issues. Tom may visit AMNH and also JSTOR. Tom will be meeting with Martin tomorrow and finalize architecture meeting Feb 29 and March 1: Agenda coming: Tom, Chris and Thorny will develop it after Chris returns from Germany. Possible Directors meeting in March or April, probably in Cambridge.
National Leadership Grant/IMLS: rare book scanning--Christie is interested. Any partner libraries planning IMLS submissions? Philadelphia Acad Natural Sciences--Tom preparing a position paper for their potential partnership in BHL. Perhaps they are a good candidate for this grant? Best practices for scanning rare books? Connie will send Tom some times for a conference call
OCLC Collection Analysis?? Any news?
Chris is working on Name Services and will have an email at the end of the week.
Next call December 4, 2007 at 11 AM eastern time.
