AGENDA and NOTES
- Secretariat Update
- Public Wiki Migration. EC approved the plan to use a Smithsonian hosted WordPress site for the BHL Public wiki. Migration to WordPress is underway and being managed by Grace Costantino. Those with existing logins to the public site (a very small number of people) have been notified that their access to make changes will be froze affective 31 May until the new site launches.
- Private Wiki Migration. EC approved the plan to use a Smithsonian hosted Confluence site for the BHL Private wiki. Bianca Crowley will be managing the migration of the Wikispaces data to the new site. No actionable timeline for Members at this point.
- EuropeanaTech Meeting. Martin attended the EuropeanaTech 2018 meeting in Rotterdam. A very good meeting all around. MRK had to opportunity to have side meetings with staff from the BnF (thanks to introductions by Gildas Illien) regarding BHL/BnF collaborations; Henning Scholtz (former BHL Europe head and now at Europeana) about BHL ingest into Europeana (Bianca is working with Henning on that), and George Oates on BHL visualizations.
- 2018 LEADS Fellow. SIL has selected Gretchen Stahlman as a LIS Education and Data Science fellow as part of a Drexel IMLS grant. Gretchen is a pre-doc working with Bryan Heidorn at University of Arizona School of Information; her project will involved mining geo-references from BHL data.
- ARKs in the Open Initiative. Martin has been invited by the California Digital Library to participate in the ARKs in the Open Advisory Group. Participation will be primarily from as part of co-chairing the Smithsonian's Globally Unique IDentifer Working Group, but there will be added BHL benefit knock-ons.
- European Science Press Visit. Laurence Bénichou (French Museum Science Press) and Isabelle Gérard (Royal Museum for Central Africa). Through their experiences as leaders of scientific publishing within natural history institutes in Europe, Bénichou and Gérard will present how the creation of a new taxonomic journal led to the setup of a new collective strategy in Europe and enabled development of new metrics more relevant to the evaluation of biodiversity research. They will speak at Smithsonian Libraries on 28 June 2018. Bénichou and Gérard lead a working group on e-publishing at the CETAF (Consortium of European Taxonomic Facilities). Laurence will also have a side meeting with Carolyn Sheffield during her time in Washington.
- Technical Update | Notes from All Calls Are Online
- Transcription Ingest Up Next. Mike is working on cleaning up some small Gemini issues and the next major tasks will be the ingest of existing transcription center/project content. He is currently reviewing existing needs documents (generated over the past year) and will create a project plan based on that.
- 2018 IIIF Conference. Smithsonian Libraries staff (Joel Richard and Keri Thompson) are attending the IIIF conference in Washington this week. This will help inform BHL serving of IIIF formats.
- Metadata Model Refresh. Martin is reviewing the Index Data proposal for the metadata model refresh and will have more information once he's completed the review.
- App Server Rebooting. Joel and Mike are developing a plan for active/manual rebooting the app server services
- Topics from the Chair and Members (Connie)
- EOL Meeting Update. Connie reported on the EOL meeting; EOL will celebrate it's 10th anniversary this year. EOL will look at a new governance structure.

- Barbara Ferry asked what was happening to the next steps to follow up on the discussion groups at the annual meeting. Good question: Jane noted: BHL EC will discuss on the 31 May call.
- Tomoko Steen: LC doing digital archiving, how can BHL be involved? Tomoko will send more information to Martin
- Tomoko Steen: Gemini "Reference Questions". LC is willing to help on that.
- Michael Cook: MC and Carolyn will work on a Doodle poll to schedule the 2019 meeting since Michael needs to start booking rooms
- Jane Smith: We should look into the AHRC-Smithsonian Fellowships in Digital Scholarship opportunity.
- Tech Priorities: Jane had Martin remind the group of current tech priorities (Transcription, DOI assignment, metadata model, "small tasks")
