Agenda
- Introductions: Jackie Chapman
Graduated from NC Chapel Hill. "New JJ." BHL Librarian.
Robin introducing: Adriana interning with Robin and helping with Gemini requests and helping exploring e-floras. Student at UMD.
- New Interface - do we want to do a show and tell in the NH building for SI Staff (SIL and SI curatorial staff)?
Thread on Taxacom - people not aware that to find hits for things other than book title, you have to look in horizontal scroll bar. Maybe some changes need to happen to navigation in UI.
Would like to do s how and tell. Coordinate with Gil Taylor. There is an all-staff meeting this Friday, as well as second Friday in April at 10:30. We could have someone speak a little bit about new UI at meeting.
Action: Martin will talk to Gil about coordinating.
- Workflow (TBD): Barcoding of rare book tags and the upcoming SIRIS global URL (Meeting scheduled for April 8)
Suzanne: Scheduled meeting April 8 open to any who wants to attend. Meeting will go over workflow for scanning specifically rare books and the importance of the barcode staying consistent. If things get recataloged or relabeled, how do we keep it consistent? Email Suzanne to attend.
- FYI: Next Flickr Tagging Party April 2 with Ocean Portal
Bianca: In past we put out a feeler to JHU about involvement in tagging parties. They are interested in doing tagging party with BHL, but it might be something we explore. Because it's off-site, there are difficulties, but this would be first off-site Flickr tagging opportunity.
We could potentially also reach out to art libraries to do tagging parties. Point is that it's supposed to be open to anyone with interest.
Ann: If we have overflow of people that don't fit in room, we can always utilize empty spaces in library, not just training rooms.
Martin: Also send to Nancy Proctor to encourage her network to attend. And Effie Kapsalis.
Bianca: At parties, we provide recommendations for taxonomic correctness based on EOL lists. we encourage people to add name as they see it or updated names if they know it.
- National Park Service Annual BioBlitz --any interest in BHL representation? - May 17-18, 2013. K-12 students.
BHL has not really had any citizen science engagement activities.
Martin: These are the kinds of things that grow out of the BHL instances at host institution libraries. This would be a really great thing for Smithsonian Natural History library to take on. Ann and her staff should pursue as Smithsonian Natural History Library as part of BHL. Coordinate with Katja Schultz who is coordinating bioblitz for EOL. Erick Mata said there would be a local representative at the bioblitz, but we're not sure who it's going to be. No one from central EOL participating. Ann happy to be present, but as an exhibitor you must provide a hands-on activity.
Martin: Passing on this time. We can think about it more for the future. BHL resources are not as handy for bioblitz environment at this point.
- BHL Table receptivity at Seeking the Unknown Symposium
Ann: Went down to historic New Orleans collections symposium on history of natural history in Louisiana. Brought BHL material and set up table as part of symposium. Very popular. Took cards and brochures.
Martin: Please write this up as a blog post. Draft ready by April 1st. Send to Grace.
- BHL Staff Listserv maintenance
Suzanne sent out email to staff, but let Suzanne know if there needs to be any updates. Who is the manager of the list and who should be? Keri and Bianca are co-managers. Bianca should take over sole manager.
- Permission to scan Russian titles? (waiting on approval from MK & NEG)
Martin: Bianca, resend form to Martin to scan. Martin alone will sign on behalf of entire project.
