LCDiscussions

Background:
Library of Congress was rewarded a Sloan grant to digitized materials with Internet Archive. LC is tasked with creating a best practices document for handling of brittle materials through a mass scanning project. Their work will include the testing of brittleness, how it should be handled, and the workflow of this material through a scanning project. They are willing to share their results with others in draft phrase.

Since they will be using Internet Archive and consider themselves part of the OCA, LC contacted the Smithsonian to find out our workflow, etc.

Over the past month, there have been various conversations with LC, Smithsonian, and BHL folks to discuss the issues surrounding the IA workflow specifically about the metadata issues.
These are just some notes (Feel free to edit, correct, add to... etc):

LC lead contact is Aaron Chaletzky
LC's contact for OCA is Mike Handy

Smithsonian hosted Aaron and other LC staff in our scanning room. Chris Freeland joined by phone.
Discussion centered around workflow and data flow.

Library of Congress hosed Smithsonian staff and Chris joined by phone.
Discussion was more detailed about the metadata that IA uses at the time of scanning and the lack of information that connects scans back to the host library.

Aaron will be providing the basic packing/shipping list that LC uses currently with another mass scanning project with Chris. Chris is planning on using the list provided by LC along with lists from Harvard, UIUC, Smithsonian, MoBOT, and others to come up with a template to be considered for all OCA partners.

Martin Kalfatovic will be getting contact information regarding the OCA meeting and the BHL meeting to Aaron. He will also be contacting the Boston and NY folks to find out what they are doing currently with IA regarding the packing lists and if they are searching on barcode as the identifiers.

Suzanne Pilsk will be contacting London's Bernard Scaife to find out what they are doing if not barcodes. Are they still scanning? How is it going? What is the "turn around time" for them to have finished everything to put the books back on the shelves? Are they putting them back on the shelves or shipping to off site storage? (LC indicated that they plan to ship things after the quality review of the scans to off site storage and are concerned about physical processing and storage of material through the workflow process until it is sent off site). Suzanne is to contact Robin Chandler to find out the workflow and packing list information that California Digital Library is providing to IA and if they would like to review our template.
