June 21, 2011 BHL Executive Committee notes

BHL Executive Conference Call June 21, 2011

Connie asked for the formal date of the launch of BHL --was same as EOL website Feb 1, 2008

On Call: Tom Garnett, Connie Rinaldo, Graham Higley, Martin Kalfatovic, Chris Freeland

gBHL and Life and Literature meeting - can we do them both in Chicago? Henning and Boris, Graham, Abel Packer and others from Brazil, 3 from Chinese Acad, 2 from Australian, possibly someone from Bib. Alexandrina, and funding for some from Africa.

Tom listed pros and cons: pro: people will be there anyway, Field can provide room, current BHL will have MOU and governance; con: L&L is a lot of work for many of us already, is there adequate time to provide governance docs for review, may not be formal enough, JRS foundation $$ requires that we meet with recipients and focus on Africa.

Graham noted that there are arguments on both sides but on balance since everyone is already coming to the states and spending money, it is a great opportunity. Graham noted that perhaps the global day should be organized by someone else--NHM is willing to organize, perhaps with Noha from BA. Tom suggested we get Abel involved.

Chris noted that we should focus on governance for this global meeting.

Tom will confer with Field to arrange rooms. Tom will discuss the need for separation of African and global meetings. Not sure if the African contingent can speak on behalf of their institutions.

Chris noted that we need to discuss expansion into Africa and South America.

Tom will also draft a global BHL MOU for discussion.

Poll everyone to see if this works, if so then we should do it.

Graham reminded us that the paper for Singapore is due. He will send a draft for us to review (Connie, Chris, Tom)

Darwin's Library official launch date is June 24, 2011

Graham is working with David Cone on a Darwin Library 2.

Tom is working on MacArthur funding document to address the cuts.
