June 14th Conference Call

Agenda

Notes

June 14, 2007 Conference Call

All members are not ready to ramp up to 10 scanners immediately in Boston .
Cathy is ready with at least 30% of her 280,000 vol. collection.
Connie has Museum publications ready and is working on marine
related subjects. Again, probably about 30% of a 290,000 volume
collection will be the final tally. Duplication may be problematic
but Tom's suggestion that we all put our pick-lists together and use
the nomenclature databases to identify the most important
publications will reduce this problem. IA restrictions on size of
volumes and foldouts are leading to about a 30% rejection rate in
other venues. This may make it difficult to keep up with demand from
a full pod, at least in the early stages.

There is general agreement that BHL should remain separate from EOL
though connected.

Chris and Martin are writing up some data return specifications for
all of BHL; if we just add on some data and make the same requirement
for all of us, IA might be willing to keep this data. Chris will
also speak with Robin Wendler and send a draft out more broadly.
Chris's summary from his UIUC visit:
"To quickly summarize: we think the best way to get our metadata into
IA (and then into the BHL Portal) is to have each library generate a
standard BHL Packing List, submitted with the books for scanning, and
ask IA to store that metadata in their XML files. We can then do all
kinds of things with that metadata like report back to the libraries
their itemids, IA's identifier, URL/Handle to BHL Portal."

Chris has reserved space in MOBOT for September meeting of BHL
Directors. He promised a beer tour.

Tom is meeting next week with Robert Miller, he will try to set up
the meeting so that Cathy and Chris can be included. Donat Agosti
will also be meeting with Tom. Tom hopes to engage him in
discussions about better OCR. If Christie had more time, she would
also be a good person to work on this.

No conference call next week. Tom will send some possibilities for
the following week. He and Cathy and Graham will be in Chicago for
the TED meeting.
