BHL Executive Conference Call - Tuesday 14, June 11, 2011

On call: Graham Higley, Tom Garnett, Cathy Norton, Connie Rinaldo

A. Thursday BHL IC meeting on Governance:Conference call on Thursday with IC: draft governance; call is at noon EST; Also must discuss budget cut.

What about the election? How do we do it? Nominations by email? Should we have a nominating committee? But so few people involved. Get the election and MOU all finished by this summer.

B. Global BHL: Conversation with Abel Packer: UN IPBES initiative (Intergovernmental Policy science platform on ecosystem services). Secretariat in Norway but big Institute in Brazil. BHL Scielo will be involved. Abel wondering how BHL will be involved. Tom has discussed with Christian and others. NHM is monitoring it. Part of CBD and a similar function to IPPPC. ACTION: we should all investigate and see if our institutions are involved.

This may be a fertile environment for global BHL. Possible way to coordinate and grow group. Several Brazilians (including Abel Packer) will be at Life and Lit.
Abel packer is pushing to get global BHL going.

Revise governance, MOUs, new structure by Autumn and agenda build for a 2012 launch.

Son of ebiosphere: Senior people (about 200) meeting in Copenhagen July 2012 but a full meeting in Feb/March 2013 in London (aimed more at researchers).

Abel suggested the global BHL meeting should be connected to another big meeting but 2013 is a bit late.

Graham is putting together a plan for the Copenhagen meeting.



D. Life and Lit: Grant for subsaharan African participation with an extra meeting for the African contingent.
