July 21,2009 BHL Executive Conference Call

Connie, Graham, Cathy, Tom, Chris on call

Connie noted that the lead article in the Harvard University LIbrary
Notes will be about BHL. Bob Darnton was pleased with the mission of
BHL.

feedback on the Moore proposal-- Statement of needs a bit more
focus. Graham suggested articulating a couple of specific projects
that can be selected by Moore. Provide a more granular budget
request. Chris and Tom will work on this.

Tom has reserved a pot of money to seed the hosting of the BHL corpus
at Smithsonian. Chris and Tom have been working on this but it isn't
going to happen unless there is a line item at Smithsonian. Cristian
is seeking Federal money. Tom has requested that we reallocate this
to direct scanning. It will keep NHM going and provide Harvard Botany
with some money.

Internet Archive: We have been critical of many issues but they are
providing quite a lot. IA lacks documentation or it is incomplete or
hard to find but we get free storage and bandwidth and they are
working on it. Scanning quality can still be an issue. Serving,
storing==we need to work with them. Tom, Adrian and Phil met with
Duraspace and New York Public Library, all participating in Duracloud
project. IA is grappling with replicating content. Duracloud will
provide us with hard information. The best practices aren't there
yet. We need to keep IA in our conversations.

Getting content from China; Brewster spent some time in China and Tom
arranged for him to meet (Jin Zong Shui) and Keping Ma. Brewster is
working on getting their content into the IA. Setting up Scribes in
China staffed by Chinese. Graham suggested that we send a note to
Brewster congratulating him on his work with China. All the execs
will sign.

China is signing BHL MOU

Graham is advertising for someone for Bernard's position.

Henning is in London learning to use the project management software
implemented for BHL Europe. Chris should have access.

Graham and Henning talked to Wiley Blackwell and received positive
feedback. They will supply us with metadata and OCR, we can run
taxonomic intelligence, material is free to 130 countries but west
will have to pay. Cathy noted that MBL spent $1 million to develop
taxonomic intelligence but it is still ours and not yet offered as a
feature for them. If they want that, then we can make a cash
negotiation at a later stage. We need to indicate the added value.
Cathy would take the lead if it gets to that point. One negotiation
point might be that the 12 libraries would get a big discount.
