iTunesU
Launched Feb 2, 2012
Online at
http://itunes.apple.com/us/institution/biodiversity-heritage-library/id467689660
Purpose:
Make curated collections of BHL materials available for discovery via the iTunes U platform and downloadable to mobile devices.
Points to consider:
- iTunesU requires a minimum of 6 collections before launching your store
- They suggest putting a maximum number of 30-50 items into a collection
- They suggest putting items into the collection incrementally, rather than all at once, so that people subscribe to your feeds & keep coming back for more

Ideas for 1st round of collections:
- United States expeditions (or some other national/geographic component)
- Field notebooks (once they're online, see also US Expeditions)
- ¿Publicaciones en Español de Latinoamérica? (ie. Latin America publications in Spanish?) (William)
- Claro que si. Pero, necesitamos..ok, have exhausted my Spanish. Have created a collection and made it public: http://www.biodiversitylibrary.org/browse/collection/espanol It has 1,024 volumes. iTunesU suggests 30 or so. How do we select a smaller number?
- Hmmm, any way I try it (language, region, etc.) there's no quick nor complete solution to get the 30 volumes:
- On one hand [Latin America (any language)] brings 30 titles but 40 volumes, so we can do something like:
Latin America Heritage (23 volumes: [Subject Latin America, pre-1923, not repeated]). Items (36580, 30644, 58700, 94353, 57280, 57281, 40899, 58833, 58834, 59104, 86801, 66870, 50384, 50247, 50379, 50255, 50248, 50903, 50909, 103732, 30855, 59592, 85938)
- On the other hand, I wanted to suggest a Subject like Costa Rica [Costa Rica (any language)] but it shows 38 titles and 42 volumes and a narrow search like Costa-Rica [Search for "title: Costa-Rica"] gives only 27 volumes, but does not include several of the ones tagged with Subject Costa Rica of the previous list. So again, we can propose something like:
Costa Rica en el Siglo XIX y principios del XX(19 volumes: [Subject Costa Rica, pre-1950, not repeated] + 3 volumes [Search "title:Costa-Rica"pre-1950, not repeated]). Items (25990, 20412, 37164, 49018, 100630, 19722, 19747, 19700, 19681, 105858, 37867, 47965, 25997, 24808, 24604, 110111, 20919, 21241, 61852, 6027, 41721, 67309)
- And my favorite, Biologia Centrali-Americanacannot even fit one, but two collections:
- Biologia Centrali-Americana part 1 [Biologia Centrali-Americana (all but Insecta)] 26 volumes
Items: (14587, 14588, 14589, 14590, 14591, 14592, 14593, 14594, 14595, 14638, 14639, 14640, 14641, 14645, 14643, 14597, 14598, 14596, 14599, 105791, 106364, 105794, 106393, 105793, 106394, 106365) - Biologia Centrali-Americana part 2 [Biologia Centrali-Americana (only Insecta)] 38 volumes
Items (14600, 14601, 14602, 14603, 14604, 14605, 14606, 14607, 14608, 14609, 14610, 14611, 14612, 14613, 14614, 14615, 14616, 14617, 14618, 14619, 14620, 14621, 14622, 14623, 14624, 14625, 14626, 14644, 14627, 14628, 14630, 14631, 14632, 14633, 14634, 14636, 14637, 14635)
