Meeting questions
Background:
As an open community, we now have about 1.5 million + books on line. We have about 500,000 audio and video files. The Internet Archive, under Open Content Alliance principles, wants to and will continue to support all library digitization efforts. We currently have about 150 active library partners and over 5,000 library and library institutions supporting Open Content Alliance principles. We are trying to add another 500,000 items in the next 400 days.

Draft questions and topics for the Leader’s forum:

1. Digital Lending model – Several libraries are keen to aggressively tackle this project. This would tie in very closely with the work on the Book Server (see below). Review risks, interest and commitment.

2. “Big” Digital Library – We have over 1.5 million books on-line, contributed from over 150 great libraries. Question: how do we coordinate and leverage these disparate collections to weave a functional, growing, relevant research and public library? Have we reached a critical mass and if not, what do we have to do get one?

3. Tools/services – Many of you have developed tools and services to get more value and use out of these on-line materials. How do we marry these together to maximize our individual efforts? Where do we have gaps in these tools/services? Who can help plug these holes?

4. Records management – With Open Library, we can now update and improve Bib/MARC records. Is this enough?

5. Scanning resources – We have 100 pieces of scanning equipment in the field. There are new partnerships being formed where non- IA digitized materials are being uploaded on a regular basis. We have expanded our IA capabilities from books, to now include microform, folios, LPs, archival collections, brittle materials loose leaf items and more. How can we keep this capacity funded 2010 and beyond? What else should we be focusing on? What other needs are there?

6. Funding – The creation of digital content is not near done. How many dollars do we need and how can we fund have this. We in Ca are using stimulus dollars and have hired 38 people and are looking to hire another 100+.

7. Marketing – How do we get our message out better? Should we reaffirm who our audience is? How do we become a viable alternative within our communities?

8. Collecting materials – We are looking to get one copy of every book every published. As libraries deaccession their materials, we would like to be in line to receive them. Can you help us?

9. Other – Storage (other alternatives?), Materials (other than books?), International impact/cooperation, ???. Finding aids ??, Delivery tools?? Collaborative efforts with ??, Uses (and abuses!) of the material, Solving big problems with our data, etc.

Attendees – In discussions with some of you, the thought is the people who attend should be at a level in their institution that they can commit resources and assert direction versus just coming to gather information. We can disseminate our results to a larger audience from the Open Content Alliance list, but this meeting should be about setting the strategy and hammering out an action plan.
