GUID discussion
Friday 3rd December, TMB & Technical Meeting
Defining the process for DOIs – BHL-Europe/Global BHL [Atos, Adrian,Chris F]
Following on from googlegroup discussion titled:- ‘CrossRef meeting re: BHL DOIs’
- Statistics will be available anytime CrossRef is used.
- In line with CiteBank – Parent child GUIDs are needed for everything we have in our collection.
- A GUID is needed at page level. We will need to create our own GUID mint that will create this requirement.
- Handles/ARK: applied at every level of granularity that requires uniqueness i.e. page level etc.
Agreed approach:-
- US will take on activity of trying DOIs starting with monographs.
- Instant feedback to determine if we can do this across all BHL content.
- Where ever we need a DOI we should do this through a central institution .i.e BHLUS. This reduces cost with minimal maintenance.
- GUIDs will be similar however the requirements will be different. If we want a referenced GUID we will apply thru the US and they will pay for it and make it accessible for everyone.
- Q: How many prefixes will we need or have?
- Prefix will be for example - which institution as assigned by CrossRef
- Does BHL-Europe have to have it’s own prefix?
- Do we need a DOI prefix for what we are doing in Europe?
- A: If we have a system that uses GUIDs then we don’t need DOI.
- Using our own services would then fragment the author….if citing material thru DOI they will need to fill out this form via an automated process which will be updated metadata.
- Everything we ingest will have a GUID. When a citation is required then it will have a DOI. Referencing is optional and can be done thru Revolver.
- Every page needs a GUID
- Citing without a DOI would require a form filling process.
- Agreed: to start investigation with E-monographs since they are attainable.
- We don’t need DOI at all just use Handle Servers.
- Some works in BHL- Europe will be part of DOI and some will not.
- If they don’t use our minting system then we need to ensure uniqueness as we can’t map 2 GUIDs against the same material….i.e you need unique identifiers against the same material - Hence the reason why we are minting from one system.
- Q: Do China mint their own or from us? – (opt in model).
- Agreed: a BHL GUID and a DOI GUID
- Every object will eventually be digitized with its own unique GUID.
- Wolfgang needs to handle this within the Schema.
Adrian/Henning:
- It was agreed by TMB that the Scrum Backlog would not be used for estimating work effort to tasks.
- Wolfgang’s workload (Ongoing Improvement to OCR) will be ‘managed by exception’.
