Letters of Support
- What do you think the "ideal" letter of support for this project is?
- Do you know someone who'd be keen to write one?
SUMMARY
In informal discussions with a granting agency, it was determined that the potential for a successful, large grant for field notebooks was good. The parameters of the project are that it be "big", "forward thinking", and "reproducible".
A broad sketch of how such a project would look is as follows:
- Collection level inventory description records (building on the CLIR grant received by the Smithsonian)
- Digitization of field notebooks (page images)
- Selective rekeying and/or tagging of portions of the notebooks
- Digitization of collection specimens mentioned in field notebooks
- Digitization of printed literature related to expeditions or collecting trips (building on BHL)
- Linking of collection level records for field notebooks with collection level descriptions of specimen collections; printed literature; and specimens
- Integration of a modified DRM model for sensitive materials (perhaps based on the Internet Archive "lend a in copyright book" model) that would allow for access to sensitive materials to "trusted" users
- Build on other identity management tools to provide "trusted" users access to sensitive materials; work with "FoF" (friend of friend) network tools (e.g. LinkedIn, there's another one for scientists I can look up) to assist with identity management and vetting of "trusted" researchers
- Project integration (building on the IMLS grant to MOBOT for the Englemann collection) http://engelman.wikispaces.com/
Deliverables
- Working, populated architecture that allows for cross-linking of field notebooks, specimens, printed literature, and collections level information
- Proof of concept for DRM and identity management tools
