February 3, 2009 BHL Executive Committee Notes

BHL Executive Call February 3, 2009 Minutes

Graham: May 1 is the agreed date for BHL Europe contract fund disbursement and May 11 is first BHL Europe meeting. Congratulations all around.
Connie: IMLS grant
Chris: Architecture meeting: Chris needs to know who should get the agenda. John Furfey and Ahmed Hamed will be coming in and out and possibly Paddy and Shorthouse. Article Repository will be discussed. Evaluating Biblio drupal module for uploading articles (Life Desk already using it) . Open Journal System, Omeka and Fez have also been reviewed but Biblio so far the best. Now need to test with Fedora.
Tom: Next week Chris and Tom meeting with Sandy Payette (Fedora) and Michele Kimpton (Dspace). They are exploring a new package as a mid-layer between repositories and cloud computing. Next week meeting with Field Museum Biosynthesis group about vetted bibliographies.
Tom is hiring BHL Collections Coordinator: Bianca Lipscomb and will start Feb 17. She will be looking at BHL in relation to other projects like AnimalBase.
Tom will be talking with Jean Farrington of California Academy of Sciences/CDL regarding relationship to BHL. What does it mean to be a member of BHL? Should add BHL Europe head (Henning Scholz) to BHL IC. Want to find avenues for participation by like-minded institutons.

Suggested requirements:
must sign a document agreeing to share openly scanned biodiversity literature; must be in a parent organization aligned with biodiversity; devote resources--staff, director and travel funds. May have different levels of membership. Graham suggested perhaps have 3 members from Europe, Australia, US, Asia, etc elected from Institutional Council.

Graham will put together some thoughts for the Institutional Council meeting.

Cathy reminded us that the funders, Sloane/MacArthur, signed up to support the 10 founding members

Need to work on sustainability now. What are the institutions willing to do to support BHL?

Patrick Vermouth (consultant for EOL) has prepared a confidential document about funding sustainability.
