AGENDA and NOTES
- Secretariat Update (MRK)
- In Kind Call is out. Carolyn has sent out the call for in kind contributions.
- Technical Update (MRK) [Reminder: all Tech team call notes are here]
- Not Much new since Member call on 30 January.
- BHL Downtime. As per my message of yesterday, Joel Richard is working on getting a Root Cause Analysis on the BHL downtime of 31 January.
- Joel's query to our CIO was: Based on my experience yesterday, this included the three BHL servers (sil-vpapp-bhl, sil-db-bhl1, sil-db-bhl2) which are all Win 2012 R2. My larger concern is that the outage occurred at 12:45pm and I started getting Nagios alerts at 12:55 (so that's good), but of the three servers that were ultimately impacted, it wasn't until 4:00pm that all of three them were back online and the last Nagios recovery alert came through. Is my assumption correct in that the individual servers each had to be addressed by hand in turn to correct the mistake due to connectivity being lost? That would explain the long delay. Finally, are you going to do an RCA on this?
- OCIO First Response: While automated measures were implemented to expedite the remediation, some systems were unable to receive the resolution and had to be manually visited. This impacted recovery time. An RCA is in the works and we’re already implementing new procedures to prevent this from occurring again. Certainly, we are cognizant of the negative impacts and apologize for the disruption— it’s not the way we like to operate, for sure.
- Increased Dark Storage at Smithsonian. Joel reported that the Smithsonian OCIO provided Smithsonian Libraries with an additional 60TB of storage for digitization and BHL IA file back up.
- Topics from the Chair (Connie)
- January Copenhagen Recap: GBIF. Connie spent 3 hours with GBIF staff and gave a talk to 15 or so GBIF staff on BHL. Also spent time along with Donald Hobern, Tim Hirsch, and D. Schiegal. They are in favor of having the reciprocal partnership. Dmitry noted that GBIF has reverted to linking to BHL content directly; some discussions of joint funding projects.
- January Copenhagen Recap: Copenhagen NH: Also met with Katherine Richardson of the Copenhagen Natural History Museum; received a back scenes tour, status of library service at the museum (not very active); comprised of Zoological, Geological, and Botanical museums. All will be moving to a new location where they will all be colocated. Might have an option for an Affiliate partnership.
- Planning for 2018 Annual Meeting (MRK/Connie/Carolyn)
- We have a planning call scheduled for 2 February
- Other
- Membership Committee Meeting. Doug will convene the Membership Committee via a call on 8 February.
