Ex Libris KBART File Requirements

Hello Adam,

We are indexing the following schema: https://www.nlm.nih.gov/bsd/licensee/medpmmenu.html (more information available at https://www.nlm.nih.gov/bsd/licensee/access/medline_pubmed.html and https://www.nlm.nih.gov/bsd/licensee/announce/2015.html).

Please note that this schema changes every year, and that the NLM also has two other schemas that might be more useful and easier for your purposes: BITS and JATS http://jats.nlm.nih.gov/extensions/bits/ and http://jats.nlm.nih.gov. We are able to work with both.

Sorry, but I do not know. The agreement between ProQuest and Ex Libris is subject to certain regulatory approvals and will close when such approvals are granted. Until then, both companies continue to operate exactly as they have been operating until now, so you will have to write to ProQuest directly.

By the way, since Proquest and Ex Libris are now the same company, do you know if Proquest also supports the PubMed xml schema? (I’ve already checked with OCLC – they support it.)

Hi Adam,

Apologies for missing that part of your question. We are supporting several formats and schemas – and yes, PubMed xml schema is among them. Usually we analyze new collections based on a data sample manually and then run tests automatically to determine if there are outstanding issues. As long as the format and schema are consistent and as long as the metadata elements are correct and populate the mandatory fields, we should be able to work with most formats and schemas. That being said, we usually work with .xml and MARC as file formats.

Hi Adam,

Thank you for the email. SFX uses a KBART title list to direct the end user to the article level (using the inbound syntax of the database provider and the metadata in the title list). Other Ex Libris products are compatible with various standards and formats such as .xml and MARC. I am attaching PDFs with indexing recommendations for book, reference entry, and journal article metadata. I hope this answers your question.

Title Level KBART

Hi Shir,

I am responding to your message below about your interest in receiving BHL title level data in the KBART RP format. Short answer is we are working on it. Longer answer is earlier this year BHL charged a task force to look into mapping BHL data to the KBART format. We've completed the BHL to KBART mapping and have generated a test file. The problem is, the test file reveals some significant challenges. There is no getting around the fact there will need to be some manual data cleanup and potentially some changes to the underlying database and workflow. Our group is in the process of reviewing the options and making some recommendations. Good news is your email will help us build a case for allocating resources to fix the data problems. I'll add your name to our project wiki as our Ex Libris contact. We will keep you in the loop.

Please allow me to introduce myself. My name is Shir Ben-Or and I am a member of Ex Libris' Publisher Relations team. I am contacting you following requests from our customers to add Biodiversity Heritage Library collections in SFX, Ex Libris' link resolver. Apologies if you are not the right person to answer this and please let me know if I should write to a different person in the future.

If you are not familiar with SFX or other link resolvers, it stores metadata at a title/journal level (ISSN, Title, Publisher, Year, Volume, Issue, etc.) and allows delivery of content from various discovery platforms. Using the inbound syntax of the database provider, SFX can provide linking to the article and page level. SFX has the ability to mark which titles or collections are full-text or abstracts and indices only. In order to add Biodiversity Heritage Library's collections in SFX we will need title lists formatted according to KBART guidelines (preferably in an Excel spreadsheet) for your content (including, if relevant, ISSNs, ISBNs, coverage dates, and links to each publication) as well as an explanation of linking syntax to the book, journal, volume, issue, and article levels For more info about KBART guidelines, see http://www.uksg.org/kbart/s1/summary.

Collections in SFX are consistent with the sales packages so that customers can activate the collections in tandem, and we would prefer it if you were able to supply separate title lists for different publication material with a description: for example, one title list for books, and another for journals. We can retrieve title lists from an FTP server or a static web link. If you would like to do this, we can also create a folder on our FTP server.
