December 7, 2010 BHL Executive Committee notes
BHL Executive Committee Conference Call December 7, 2010
Tom Garnett, Cathy Norton, Chris Freeland, Connie Rinaldo, Martin Kalfatovic
Topics:
A. BHL Europe meetings: Graham reported briefly that there is a slight mid-project hiatus. By Christmas more detailed level of planning available. Minutes on wiki:
BHLE_Fall-Mtg-2010. Chris reviewed the technical meeting. Chris suggested that the BHL portal application could be used.
ACTION: Tom will send his draft budgets for hibernation, maintenance and moving forward to Henning Scholz.
B. Cambridge University Press issue: Cambridge Global Grid for learning is interested in integrating BHL metadata into their content. Also contacted by Proquest (Summon, data aggregator); marketed to libraries. Need a response/policy. If we do this and they need help then we need service charges and a cut. But if we make data available easily then maybe we can't charge. Chris says we point at our free services and if they need something else then we look at charges. A cut would be more complicated. Be loud and proud about being free and open. We should write to the top 50 aggregators and let them know the data is available. Need a policy that any time tech team is required, we need to charge.
ACTION: Tom will draft policy about aggregators (January)
ACTION: Tom will have an informational call with CGG.
Is Cambridge Global Grid related to CUPress and could they possibly provide backfiles?
Cathy suggested we might want to include commercial logos but Graham and Tom think this could be problematic.
C. Money for Harvard Botany was late getting started thus we have an extra $20,000. Tom suggests we split it between AMNH, NYBG
D. CiteBank: Chris noted that a group reviewed Citebank and gave a favorable functional review. Email to whole list is out. Will get input, comments and hard data. Articleized pdfs are showing up. Too early to say what the connections between BHL and Citebank will evolve to. Some content is not available in citebank (taxonomic names). For now they are separate.
There are some proposals in process that will allow expansion of Citebank.
E. Lounsbery Proposal: Lots of edits and suggestions. Tom's issues to note--it is possible that the lit conference could be connected to a son-of-ebiosphere conference but not certain and there are pros and cons. Another possibility is having it hosted at the Biosynthesis Center at Chicago--they are very interested in doing the business part. Field has room that can accommodate 120 people and some breakout rooms. They can administer the billing, reimbursement, hotel etc. The timing is really tight. Dates need to be locked in very soon. ACTION: Cathy volunteered to help with planning beginning in January.
- Others: Graham noted that the dates for the IC meeting have been set and will be in DC. Chris noted that MOBOT can host a meeting but no plans yet.
