BHL Staff meeting 5/16/13
Agenda:
New BHL Vision, Mission, Goals (Bianca, Grace)
- Vision & Mission on BHL homepage
BHL vision & mission statements approved by Steering Committee. Based on work from staff meeting in Sept 12. Used to be “sparking discovery” and changed to “inspiring discovery”. Secretariat looked at shortened mission based on suggestions from staff meeting.
Goals -temporary group from BHL who looked at them, headed by Matt. 6 goals shortened to 5 but with same themes. SC tweaked a bit and approved goals. These are much more public now.
Goal 5 sustainable – is this financial only? No also refers to flexible, and adaptable. “openly and freely available” should it be open instead of openly? Maybe, will pass this on
Goals help us all understand the bigger picture of what we are involved in.
- Other IC Meeting updates (Bianca, Grace), see the IC 2013 Meeting Notes
IC meeting in Woods Hole MA last week.
Highlights
Dues – budget approved by SC $10k, $25k can be used for scanning now – Sept, new contract with IA and SI will be doing another $10k on the contract.
Membership – looking at how to grow membership, who to target, big gaps so need new potential members, scaling issue when taking on new members
Bianca mapped projects and initiatives to goals. See
Projects+and+Initiatives Need to determine what is active or becoming active, how to prioritize? Since our Sept meeting we have completed 7 things on list. Secretariat manages list, adds to list. Shaded lines are complete or will be tabled for later. *Note the BHL teams tab at bottom of list
Bianca is looking at Institutional Pubs that are scanned but lacking a permission agreement form on file so we know what we can do with them when reusing copyrighted content
UI updates (Bianca, Tech Team/TAG reps)
- Contributing library information is back in the book viewer, e.g. http://www.biodiversitylibrary.org/item/109414 (Marty can’t view contributor in Firefox)
- Search results - Mike is making progress on improving search results display. He sent some demos to TAG and others for review. These can be viewed by anyone on the beta.biodiversitylibrary.org site. Send feedback to Bianca.
- Q: How can I get a report on everything my library has scanned for the BHL?
Quick Gemini update (Jackie)
- Jackie is assigning scan requests and backlog (about 87 to go), thank you for your help and feedback. Jackie is not assigned to new requests so please reassign to Jackie if you have questions. Encouraging everyone to keep issues moving forward by reassigning if you cannot fulfill.
