Notes
New Staff
AMNH welcoming Gretchen to their staff; not yet sure what her involvement in BHL will be.
Cam Wies, Graduate student for U of Kentucky interning w Bianca. Reconciling moving walls permissions.
EC & Member Update
Naturalis is now Affiliate of BHL. Canadian Museum of Nature and SIA has applied,
And hoping for Affiliate application from Narodni Museum in Prague and BHL Australia applying for Membership.
Members Meeting, April 12-15 in London at Natural History Meeting and Kew. Meeting and celebration for 10 year anniversary
Technical Update - Joel
Not a lot new report for the move to SI. We’re in a holding pattern.
Collections Committee - Bianca
We are working on putting together
recommendations on the possibility of including "visual resources" for EC to review. See doc:
Samples were loaded into beta site. We’ve proposed a few options for incorporating. Stay tuned for more updates, post Members meeting.
Scanning - Carolyn
Update since call– no longer need to hold on Pan-BHL scanning!
(On call, requested hold on Pan-BHL Scanning based on status of pending contract vehicles; all were in place later that day.)
Discovery Tools Working Group - Diana
The Group’s last call was yesterday. We figured out the rest of tickets for adding to Gemini, outlined changes needed to align with KBART.
Also looked at how impacts Journal holdings; I don’t believe that those are yet in Gemini. Sent a sample JATS file to OCLC. Mike and Susan will work on that.
Adam will be on Tech Call on Monday to discuss how this work might move forward.
Notes about this group's work:
DiscoveryTools
User Feedback Management – Jackie
At the in-person Staff Meeting in November, this group was charged with coming up with way to manage feedback. We’ve put together some specific models that we’d like feedback on and Jackie will be on Members’ Call next week to present those. Proposed options include having more types on the web forms; stop having someone assign scan requests to particular institutions. Instead, these will be diverted into one workspace and BHL Staff can go through list and pick and choose what would you like to take on; Sending reference/research questions to partner libraries.
So we will need to share the responsibility across the consortium.
We will need Staff help with responding to our users. For example, users who contact us because their PDF isn’t working, or a link isn’t working. Who will help with that?
Going back to scan requests, essentially any request that comes from a user goes to a big list. So rather than getting a scan request assigned to you, it will be added to a big holding spot for all scan issues. You’d have to review and select what you want to scan.
That could work well. Sometimes things assigned to us, we don’t actually have it or the capacity to scan.
We would also be able to tag things as an institution has looked at it and either doesn’t have it or can’t scan it.
Exactly! If you search it and mark it as can’t do it, you can leave a comment.
How can we filter out the ones we’ve commented on already?
Easiest might be to sort by date and track how far you’ve gotten.
That makes sense. Currently we can remove ourselves. Maybe some kind of reminder would be good. If I never get a reminder, then I’ll forget. Perhaps a periodic (annual, semi-annual?) reminder to look at the Scanning Request Pool.
Group discussion notes
Cataloging Group – Diana Duncan
On our call last month, four of us reviewed some of the tickets. Some we moved out because tagged incorrectly, we resolved one. Currently 13 open tickets. Don’t believe there is a Chair for this group.
Expanding Access – Mariah
Project is moving along.
28 positive responses from institutions interested in participating.
We’ve identified issues and Joel has already been making changes in Macaw to address these. Mariah is in process of updating documentation.
We’re working on creating an EABL specific collection.
Found a treasure trove of items in IA without MARCXML, Mariah is reviewing and ingesting those. Collections from Penn Horticultural Society and U of California.
Also producing video training for Macaw for EABL contributing institutions and BHL as whole. Feel free to contact Mariah and Patrick with questions or suggestions of partner institutions.
Outreach Update - Grace
Next BHL Social Media Campaign will be BHL at 10. We offiically formed in 2006, so this year we’ll be celebrating our 10th anniversary. As part of the meeting in London, we’ll also be running social media campaign. It will launch during that same week of April 11-15. We’ll be also be highlighting the anniversary throughout 2016.
The campaign itself will coincide with National Library Week. For our own campaign, we’ll be highlighting content contributions from our partners. We’ll also be tieing into the National Library Week theme of Libraries Transform.
Goals for the BHL at 10 Campaign include demonstrating impact on science; highlighting history and growth; telling the story of how we came to be; within collections, we’ll be highlighting different subcollections related to 10th anniversary:
Top 10 viewed and Top 10 downloaded. For each Member, Affiliate and Partner we’ll also highlight top contributed item and contributions related to milestones. There will also be a fundraising aspect to the Campaign, including email appeals and a CaféPress store.
Hashtag for the overall campaing will be #bhlat10. There will be live webcasts. For the public BHL Day, there will be live tweeting, hashtag #bhlday just for that event.
See Planning document for more details. Send questions to Grace.
Bianca: Grace got feedback from Siobhan Leachman, World Class Outreach Effort! Thank you, Grace!
Grace: Many thanks to all! Not possible without all of your work and the amazing content you all provide.
Documentation
Trish produced documentation on how to find and use BHL images, linked in agenda. Hopefully will clarify strategies for users. Questions about reuse, feel free to send to Bianca.
BHL documentation is (generally speaking) all open, all the time. One or two documents marked as needing to request access.
Joel produced Tip Sheet on communicating needs in effective way for Tech folks to take a look at bugs or understand what change requests really mean. 1 page guide that folks might fine useful for other tech related things outside of BHL, too.
Bianca working on documentation for page insert process, soon. Page inserts w/in Macaw documentation, too.
Marty attended Hathi webinar copyright review project and what they’re doing seems relevant to BHL. The slides and talk should be available (Marty has since sent around to BHL-Staff list).
Volunteer needed for next Staff call - thanks Diana Duncan!
Bianca will be on leave traveling Ireland with family after the London meeting and unavailable to lead the next call.
