Committee Updates
Technical Team
- Full text search update (Carolyn)
- Scheduled to launch in May! Changes will include searching across the BHL corpus, filtering search results, and search inside a book. Thank you to everyone who participated in testing. Thanks also to Mike and the whole Tech Team. He and Joel will be finalizing things for the upcoming launch. More details will be shared a week prior to launch. Matt and Susan voiced a vote of confidence for what they've seen so far.
- Beginning planning for private/public wiki back up plans (Bianca) -- how are people feeling about making the transition to a new tool(s)?
- some folks looking forward to a fresh start!
Executive Council / Members
- BHL Annual Meeting recap (Martin)
Collections Committee (Bianca)
- Putting final touches on Page redaction policy
- wrapping up evaluation of segment types (chapters, book reviews)
- new initiatives:
- loading electronic only moving wall content from EABL project (for example, PDFs of born digital)
- future of electronic content in BHL
- page type definitions -- has anyone else struggle to understand what our page type terms mean when paginating in Macaw or the Admin Dash? How are these assigned? IA technicians make a decision about it or through BHL Staff assigning in Macaw. If you see something that looks off, feel free to make changes. Feel free to also contact the partner institution or Bianca.
Sometimes people have used Table of Contents as a hack to control thumbnail image that's shown in BHL and DPLA. It may not be understood well how the thumbnail is selected so would be good to document. For born-digital, in-copyright page so some defaults start to come in to play and it would be helpful to know what those are. Would like to discuss if it always makes sense to assign a title page.
Cataloging Group (Diana D. or Bianca)
- Met yesterday. Working on plans to reconcile creator name issues. Mike provided all of the names and MJ has a reconciliation process to run against VIAF. Diana Shih volunteered to help with fixing those. Bianca and Susan will run a test that any changes won't affect matching. Haven't done as much with Gemini tickets so looking back to close some of those.
Field Notes (Bianca on behalf of Adriana)
Smithsonian Field Book Project - just shy of 70% of goal.
CLIR Field Notes Project - 80% of goal.
Both wrapping up May 31.
NDSR (Leora)
Wrapping up final report, also end of May.
EABL (Susan L)
NYBG and volunteers are continuing to upload born digital content and in-copyright titles that we received permission for. Work continues albeit at slower pace than when fully staffed.
Round Robin (All)
- New Members/Affiliates: total 20 Members, 20 Affiliates
- University Library Johann Christian Senckenberg (Universitätsbibliothek J.C. Senckenberg)
- Museum für Naturkunde Berlin (https://www.museumfuernaturkunde.berlin/en) (formal announcement forthcoming)
- How might copyright parameters for Germany help us determine what scan requests might be assigned to them? Generally up to discretion of institution. Copyright can be title-by-title, case-by-case. Copies of BHL corpus held at Smithsonian in U.S., copy at Bibliotheca Alexandrina in Egypt. And of course at IA in San Francisco. However we're serving content from US servers. Rules of copyright re-use governed by nature of use and where in the world you're using it.
- Title merging / replacing items
- Please keep up with title merging in BHL. You can reconcile via Admin Dashboard; can show all items through one record. Please continue to do that where you can. Because titles and items are separate in BHL, both need to be addressed.
- Preferred way to handle a bound volume containing multiple monographs currently linked to single bib record one of the monographs. Do we add all the bib records for all the monographs ink to each one,? Just add series bib and link to that? Both? http://biodiversitylibrary.countersoft.net/workspace/0/item/58272
- NYBG defines articles for this. Once user clicks on link, they immediately go to first page. Susan L would be happy to provide Susan B with more details on that option. Field - working on documentation. There is also the option of adding multiple bib records, adding series bib would be appropriate. They could search for all of those things under one concept.
