Sobering Statistics
- As of 2/5/2009, BHL has published 27,440 items (volumes).
- Of those, 15,730 are from titles labeled as a serial (MARCLeader char@007 with values 's' or 'b').
- 57% of BHL scanned items are from serials
- Chris F counted number of articles in 27 (.1% of population) BHL scanned items.
- Found an average of 35.48 articles / item
- 15,730 items x 35.48 articles/item = 558,100 articles available in BHL to date.
Use Cases & Samples
Legal Issues
-Notes from introductory call with Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF)
Similar projects for reference
- Nature Precedings
- sample doc: http://precedings.nature.com/documents/2399/version/1
- Advantages:
- Assign DOIs and Handles
- Allows for comments and response
- allows for user input of related articles
- clear interface with license, search, and related info all displayed on initial page.
- Disadvantages:
- Preprints only; doesn't appear to have modules for previously published materials
- [tg] The preprints only aspect is a policy decision and I see nothing in the design or interface that would preclude accepting previously published materials.
- Scribd
- sample doc: view sample
- Advantages:
- existing infrastructure
- well-defined APIs and tools
- mechanism for handling copyright infringers
- can make a group public or private. This might allow temporary quarantining of questionable permission stuff.
- bulk uploader - many contributors will have excel files and bunches of pdfs ready-to-go. Forcing them to do one at a time upload will be a downer. This allows you edit tags, titles, and other metadata before full uploading from a decent UI.
- Disadvantages:
- no buy-in from nat. hist. community
- fear of reputation damage (some oddball publications in the site)
- The whole site appears to rely of this ipaper standard, which is not widely used and though it appears easy to convert many file formats INTO ipaper, I couldn't find info on how to convert OUT of it.
- While there are many good features, I don't think we could use it "tout court" for a bhl article repository [tg]
- SciVee TV: http://www.scivee.tv/
- Advantages
- new publishing platform built around video content linked to scientific articles and posters
- Should drive traffic to increase access to specific articles if the author invests time to make the podcasts or video
- Disadvantages
- not a model for the BHL; requires contributors not only to upload but to create entirely new content - who is going to do it.
- decidely non-textual orientation (not just text+ but actually non-textual)
