Nancy provided brief financial update -- William on BHL funding starting August 1 - Mike L funded through 2014. She and Martin visiting Peter Wyse Jackson, Chuck Miller and other MOBOT staff including William, Doug, Mike and Trish to discuss Mobot's role in moving the BHL forward. More information on this meeting will be provided next month.
William provided a tech update -- work on the Citebank migration continues. Mike is working on the de-duplicating algorithm which can be used in several situations besides citations, like authors and titles deduplication. They need to review the "author names" from Citebank and then the BHL authors after the ingest to BHL. There is a current discussion about what the linking out looks and feels like and some content has been imported to the beta site for that matter.
BHL will be represented at the TDWG meeting in late October in Florence, Italy. --Trish, William and Jiri Frank (National Museum of Prague) may form panel if topic is accepted by conference organizers.
William also reported that MOBOT is doing two test installations in virtualized environments -- one for Solr (
http://lucene.apache.org/solr/), a software for faceted full text searching and another stand alone server for RefBank (
http://vbrant.ipd.uka.de/RefBank/search), a repository network for bibliographic citations in the natural sciences developed under ViBRANT (
http://vbrant.eu/), an EU-funded project where BHL will contribute their citations.
BHL Global: The next Global meeting will likely be the first week of February. BHL Europe is working on ingesting and has now 19,000 volumes already. Proposals have been submitted to CETAF (www.cetaf.org) for support. China is copying the files and still trying to complete a mirror site. Disks (of material copied from the IA copy in MBL Cluster) are moved to the Smithsonian before being sent to China. Brazil is still trying to use MACAW integrated with their catalog. SciELO is having a celebration for 15 year of service and will be sending invitiations soon. Africa has new institutions in Nigeria and Senegal interested in joining BHL Africa. Kenya is also looking for sponsorship. They are creating a "flyer" for the BHL Africa. Minutes of the Global BHL meeting are now on the wiki
(4th+gBHL+Meeting+Notes).
Connie led a discussion of the revised BHL membership document. major points of revision-- eliminated "steering Committee" in favor of "the members". Nancy mentioned that we need to revise bylaws to reflect how we refer to the various levels of involvement. Tom reiterated that a big benefit was the hosted version of Macaw which will be specifically mentioned in the list of benefits. THe group clarified the benefits of being an "affiliate" vs. a member and agreed that affiliates would not participate in collections calls and meetings unless invited. It is recommended that a membership committee review applications and make recommendations for new members to the exec committee who then pass the recommendations on to the members. We can and should also encourage new members -- even if foreign
Tomoko will be presenting at a meeting of Biologists and can faciliate a discussion on getting new members for BHL -- from Canada, Japan or Korea.
Tom quickly brought up the FUndraising committee and since several members were absent from the call, he suggested that he report on their activities at next months meeting.
Nancy will be attending IFLA in Singapore.
