January

- Press. January 4, 2008. Tom Garnett and Martin Kalfatovic meet with reporter from Science News
- Meeting. January 10, 2008. Martin Kalfatovic and Suzanne Pilsk met with Eileen Matthias (librarian) at the Academy of Natural Sciences, Philadelphia to discuss BHL topics.
- Meeting. January 11, 2008. Informal meeting of BHL and OCA members at ALA Midwinter meeting in Philadelphia
- Meeting. January 15-17, 2008. Chris Freeland and Martin Kalfatovic met with staff at the California Academy of Sciences (Brian Fisher, curator in entomology, Larry Currie, head of the library, Aimee Morgan, archives and digital collections librarian, Stan Blum, head of research informatics, Jean Farrington, senior library information specialist) to give an overview of BHL activities (January 15, 2008); met with representatives of the Fedora Commons, PLoS, Topaz, and the Internet Archive to discuss Fedora topics (January 16, 2008); and met with Internet Archive staff to discuss technical issues (January 17, 2008).
- Tour. January 24, 2008. Two Smithsonian National Board members met with Tom Garnett, Martin Kalfatovic, and Keri Thompson to discuss BHL. A visit to the BHL Scribe scanner was also conducted.
- Presentation. January 30, 2008. Martin Kalfatovic and Suzanne Pilsk give an overview of the BHL at the National Agriculture Library to over 50 staff from NAL, the USDA Agricultural Research Service, and other units.
- Tour. January 30-31, 2008. Three Korean visitors representing the National Institute of Biological Resources (NIBR) met with staff at the New York Botanical Garden Library (January 30, 2008; John Mignault) and Smithsonian Institution Libraries (January 31, 2008; Martin Kalfatovic). The party consisted of: Choon Shil Lee (Professor, Dept. of Library and Information Science, Sookmyung Women's University), Young-Dong Kim (Professor of Biology, Division of Life Sciences, Hallym University), and Jung Sook Lee (Librarian, NIBR).

- Grant Submission. "Retooling Special Collections Scanning in the Age of Mass Digitization", an IMLS planning grant submitted Feb. 1 by Judy Warnement and Connie Rinaldo at Harvard. - Publicity. February 2008. "Biological Moon Shot" by Susan Milius. Science News. Feb. 2, 2008; Vol. 173, No. 5 , p. 72. Tom Garnett and Martin Kalfatovic are quote on BHL in an article about the Encyclopedia of Life.
- Publicity. February 26, 2008. EOL launch of species pages brings congruent publicity to the BHL. Numerous press outlets and blog sites discuss BHL/EOL. BHL site experiences huge surge in usage.

- Meeting. March 2008. Tom Garnett attends meeting in New Orleans
- Publicity. BHL/Smithsonian staff (Martin Kalfatovic and Gil Taylor) and EOL staff (Dawn Mason) hosted a joint BHL/EOL information table at the Smithsonian's Congressional Family Night at the National Museum of Natural History.

- Scanning. Smithsonian Libraries began shipment to the Internet Archive FedScan scanning center located at the Library of Congress. On July 31, 2008, the first shipment of 198 volumes arrived at FedScan.

- Boston Scanning Center scans 3 millionth MBLWHOI page. Over 7,000 volumes from the MBLWHOI Library scanned in 18 months of scanning center operation.

- Scanning. Smithsonian Libraries completes 565,000 pages of published materials from the SIL Entomology collection. This includes nearly 500 pre-1923 books, plus 32 journal runs (some after 1923, if permission from publisher was received).
